Did my first day ride loop out of Chiang Mai recently up and over to Pai, then back into town via 1095. We rented a couple of 250 Hondas from Mister Mechanic. I thought they might be too small, but they worked really well on the tight and twisty sections climbing out of town. The dirt section on 1095 was fun on the 250's and got some flat tracking practice in on the sweepers. (looks like they're resurfacing right now) A lot of tourists on scooters navigating with their feet down at 3mph holding the handlebars with a death grip.

Glad you had a nice time.
How did you find the way back via Wat Chan & Samoeng then?

As I’m staying near Chiang Mai University, we left town to the South to do the loop clockwise. So out on 121 almost 10km ’til we hit 1269 West towards Bang Pong. We rode 1269 until we hit the junction, shown on the GT Mae Hong Son loop map, just before Buek Chan, and went towards Samoeng Tai. Looking at the GT map and the satellite map, we then took 5032 past Mae Sap over to the junction at Huai Mana then onto 1349 all the way up to Wat Chan then 1265 towards Pai. Back to Chiang Mai via 1095. An 8 hour day start to finish with a few gas and coffee stops. The roads were spectacular and in better condition than a lot of roads I ride in Northern California!

We stopped here at this strawberry farm on 1349 - Here's where Google maps puts it from my Satellite coordinates: Click on ---> Google Maps The imaginary from Google is May 2013

Hi Wayne, yes! Hope to be riding a lot this Winter. If everything works out, I will be here at least 'til the end of February or March. Looks like the Sunshine's back, so may bust out of town next Wednesday for a day ride. Happy to answer any questions about the loop above. Did you pick up the GT Rider Maw Hong Son loop map from town? Mister Mechanic has them. Much more detailed than the Michelin map of Thailand I have. Hope to actually ride the whole Maw Hong Son loop after the holidays.
