March 2021 - Mae Chaem City
The last Wednesday of the month is Wednesday 31st March.

A "Return To" venue & in Mae Chaem for change of direction from the East side of Chiang Mai to the West.
The next "Return To" will be to the East or South of Chiang Mai.

Accommodation in Mae Chaem

Ban Kub Doi has rooms for 790 baht with breakfast
It also has a pool.

The Mae Chaem Hotel & Resort
also has a pool.

Happy Hour @ the Sikon sounds good

The dinner venue should be Muk's place
to be confirmed with transport.

Being in March, expect the weather to be hot & pleasantly smoky - the pools at both the Kub Doi & Mae Chaem Hotel will be most welcome.
Get in & enjoy it while you can.
Late April will be starting a few thunderstorms, with the 24th April Chiang Khong Music Festival, riverside by the Mekong.

For the March dinner could we have a volunteer(s) for the dinner report if possible.

The GTR Dinner in Mae Chaem was a brilliant evening, with 12 people attending. Having a smaller group gives you a chance to talk to all who are there and gives a more cosy feel.
People had ridden in from Mae Hong Son, Chiang Rai, Phayao, and Chiang Mai provinces.

Some local wildlife on the 1263 on the way from Khun Yuam thru to Mae Chaem. The 1263 was a bit rough in some sections with one 50 metre stretch of dirt on a steep downhill totally covered in thick bulldust. More than one of us skated down it hanging on and hoping for the best!

The fabulous Baan Kub Doi Mae Chaem hotel. This is a great little 8 room family run place and we had it booked out on the night. The overflow stayed in a couple of other nice hotels within walking distance.

The car parking area at the Baan Kub Doi filled up with bikes!

We all gathered next to the pool for some pre dinner drinks and watched the sun go down. Then next it was off to dinner at Muk’s. The reastaurant is a kilometre or more from the hotel so the owner kindly drove across in his pickup and gave us all a ride to dinner.

The hospitality shown in the smaller towns is second to none.

The dinner at Muk’s was absolutely delicious with everyone in agreement on the quality. That is saying something when you have a diverse group of people from many different countries!!

Another fantastic dinner!

From the dinner we were transported back to the Baan Kub Doi, where we all enjoyed a couple of night caps....as the evening rolled on the owners moved us across to the ‘honour system’ and we helped ourselves to drinks so they could go to bed. Indeed great people!

After breakfast we all meandered off at our own pace and returned home. Once again a great success of a monthly GT Rider dinner held in a small town. Everyone had a blast as usual.

The next dinner will be in Chiang Khong the night before the music fest and we already have 23 confirmed. Be there or be square!!!

Many thanks for helping out with a dinner report.
That was a pretty special night in Mae Chaem.
Super relaxed and friendly.

For the record the very lovely Muk, restaurant owner
1617472944635.png

Is an old friend of GTR.

We have known each other for 30 years, since she was a sweet teenager.

These 3 lovely gals once ran a bamboo beer bar by the main intersection in Mae Chaem, & the big bike Honda Wing 125 riders all came out to Mae Chaem regularly, to try their luck, albeit unsuccessfully.

Confirmation that the Kub Doi is a gem of a spot for happy hour.

It was a bloody hot ride home from Mae Chaem to Chiang Khong too, I can tell ya.
After a wild goose chase in Chiang Mai, for a spare Vstrom shock & a sticker shop that had moved, I was home in Chiang Khong @ 9.15PM.

A couple of pics from a boiling R1192 from Mae Chaem up to Doi Inthanon.

The highlight of my trip though, was a night ride to Rak Thai on the way from Chiang Khong to Mae Chaem.
The hills were spectacular and on fire .
1617474403158.png

Scary stuff & when the smoke gets in your eyes, it does make em water.

Arrival time in Rak Thai was late, 9.30PM, just in time to catch one beer before lights out.

For the record my place of stay in Rak Thai was the Nong Luck Place, a delightful location lakeside for 500 baht fan room.
But I neglected to get any room photos.

Some morning Rak Thai pics

Rak Thai used to be backwater way up in the mountains, off the beaten track, but not anymore.

With glamping facilities it is well and truly on the tourist trail nowadays.

You can check out Rak Thai yourself on the May GTR UP Country Dinner.

Many thanks Dave DKT for helping out with the trip report. It is much appreciated.
Thanks to all the guys who came to Mae Chaem.

Yes I must say a Ripper of a night had by all in Mae Chaem and it was extremely appreciated the lift to the Restaurant from Khun Muk. Fantastic food and Hospitality at both Restaurant and accommodation! Brilliant! Can't wait for a return to come around again! Well done David, top choice as usual!
