If you google for accomodation and Hua Mae Kham, you find some old plans for some "agrotourism" including homestays. But maybe that is a plan that never came to happen. Ok, I will try my luck in Thoed Thai, if I am lucky to manage to come next year.

Is the date for next years festival already known?

No idea other than it seems to always occur in the 2nd-3rd week of November. Best to PM Davidfl a few months prior to see if he can track down the actual dates and schedule. I just stumbled on the thing by a random tip and dumb luck. Probably missed the biggest part of the festival by not knowing any better and no Thai language skills. Only one guy spoke any English and it wasn't much. This place is way out there...............for now. As David said, it's still very much their private deal so go next year for sure before it gets all messed up.

What a wonderful trip report; thanks a lot for sharing! You wrote about a dirt road leading to the village, yet there's that pic with your ER6n. What does the road look like, is it still the kind of rough dirt track that I found elsewhere in the Internet?

The festival should be on in November when the sunflowers are out in bloom.
It should also be on a weekend. The 1st weekend is probably too close to the end of wet season & so few sunflowers.
So aim for the 2nd or 3rd or even last weekend in November, but I don't think anyone will know until a few weeks before hand - it will coincide with & be "up to the sunflowers" in full bloom I'd say.
For accommodation you can't beat John's Rim Taan guesthouse in Thoed Thai.
