Another tip off for Hmong New Year.
Pang Ung on R1263 between Mae Na Chon & Khun Yuam, new year should be at the same time, but ending on the 20th I think it was.

Hmong New Year 2011
For Hmong villages in & around the Mae Sa Valley - Samoeng Should be 5-12 January 2011 approximately.

9 January 2011 5 Hmong villages will celebrate together in Mae Sa Mai.

8 January 2011 12 Hmong villages will celebrate in Huai Sieo? out of Hang Dong?, according my Hmong contacts.
This will be the big one for around Chiang Mai; but I'm still trying to pinpoint the exact location of Huai Sieo.

Did anyone get to any of the Hmong New Year celebrations?

Attended them both & both were bigger than Ben Hur!

Huai Sieo was in fact the place where the Go Karting took place (see Dave Early's report). Massive gathering of the troops in a great setting.

Mae Sa Mai is another wonderfully set village. Another massive gathering:

The 'town crier' was there to summon all to attend:

The girls were in their best hats in Royal Ascot style:

The men showed their sporting prowess:

Whilst the family proudly looked on:

Another one. Hmong New Year is on in Huay Luk on R107 100 kms north of Chiang Mai on 25-29 Dec 2011.

Rod, sorry no idea about Vietnam & Hmong new year, but you would expect it is around the same time too.

David,
H'mong New Year in VN - called NaoX-Cha here - will apparently take place around a 15 day period at the end of Jan & begining of Feb in accordance with the lunar calendar. The H'mong are mainly found in HaGiang with a scattering in Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van, Meo Vac, Xin Man & Hoang Su Phi.
Cheers
