Laos Border crossings

Going to do a trip in January with a friend from Singapore on Singapore registered R1200GS's. What points of entry can i use into Laos and can i exit at any. Bearing in mind that exit via the north i could have a problem with loading the bikes onto make shift transport across any rivers ect. Any info would be appreciated. PS i am in the UK so will also have to obtain a visa probably at the border. Ta.
