2023 Kapok Festival

Bokeo plans bigger and better kapok flower festival

25-29 January 2023.

The 20th Kapok Flower Festival (Boun Dok Ngiew Ban) will be staged in Tonpheung district, Bokeo province, on a grander scale than in the past, with a colourful programme of events scheduled for January 25-29.

The festival resumes after a two-year absence because of the Covid-19 outbreak.
The event is a big occasion for the people of Bokeo province, as it celebrates the glories of nature in the bucolic surroundings of Don Xao island, where kapok trees produce a mass of red blossom.
Head of the Bokeo provincial Information, Culture and Tourism Department, Mr Somkhit Vongpanya, said the festival organising committee has added to the usual range of activities, and a market fair, an acrobatics show, food, beauty and sports contests, cultural performances, and a fashion show by local ethnic groups will entertain visitors.
The festival attracts at least 10,000 people from nearby areas and from neighbouring countries.
The kapok trees are at their best in January and February each year, drawing thousands of people to admire their colourful blossoms.
This longstanding event is part of the traditions that give Bokeo and its people their special identity.
The festival generates income for local residents, gives people the chance to visit a fairly remote corner of Laos, and encourages foreign businesses to invest in tourism in Bokeo province.
The market fair generates revenue for local people and the province’s economy, while giving tourists an insight into the culture and traditions of the ethnic groups living in Bokeo province.
Bokeo has many places of interest for the visitor, such as the Nam Kan Protected Area in Toub village, Huayxai district, which also offers some great adventure activities.
The lushness of the landscape makes trekking really rewarding and people who are fit and agile can enjoy ziplining and a stay in treehouse.
Huayxai district also has old temples perched atop scenic cliffs, as well as the ruins of the ancient city of Souvanna Khomkham.
Some of the best local dishes are khao laeng feun (noodles with chilli sauce) and khao soy tad (noodles with sugar sauce or honey), which is a dessert favourite.
The province has 77 officially-designated tourist sites including 53 nature-based attractions, 14 cultural sites, and 10 places of historical interest.
Bokeo is located in the far north of Laos, 624 kilometres from Vientiane, and is accessible by road and air.
