IN PHAYAO
1. Phu Thong Place for accommodation. 500 baht a night with brekky / 400 without. Excellent value for money.
2. Krua Thep Pub & Restaurant for great 70s-80s pop-rock music. Good food, staff & service.
3. Lakeview Pub. Good atmosphere & nice jazzy Thai music. Brilliant young lead guitarist & singer Mr Bird with the band Talents. They've also got a little 4 foot nothing female singer Floyd, (as in Pink Floyd.) Highly recommended for a cool night out.

The crowd at the Lakeview is younger student orientated, compared to the mature adult players at the Krua Thep. Hit both in a night, I do.

Look out for Cup Cake restaurant on the main road by the lake about as far south as you can go before the road turns back inland. The lady there speaks very good English ,went to Oz. where she learnt to cook, does the best brekky i've found in Phayao and it comes with a very good cappuccino, Fish and chips we ordered after brekky so she could get fresh from the markt. Lovely place to visit. feelthenoise,

Just what we've been in need of in Phayao for a long time - a decent brekky.
If you've got any photos we would love to see them.

The Phayao foreshore has almost endless restaurants, plus new coffee shops / bakeries all over town.

What I like.

Food & service was good.

305522=22399-IMG_8434.jpg

There are so many places along the south side, basically all offering the same thing, that I think the trick is to cruise past & see who has the most customers & then note if the customers are young or oldies, & are they eating or drinking. Some places are more popular for drinking & some for eating.

The Krua Thep is still going but certainly seems to be struggling.
The new hot pub - restaurant would appear to be the Meeting Point, with hot PG-waitresses & live music.

more to come. Phayao is the go place ..

Moving on from the Hug, 100 metres further North is

the Taukakai View Love @ Phayao.

305525=22415-IMG_8508.jpg

this place juts right out on the water & is considerably up-market from the HUG.

305525=22416-IMG_8512.jpg

enormous servings of good food.

You can sit out on the terrace, if the rain & wind are not incoming.
Or you can sit inside with the band playing 70s hits -One Way Ticket.

305525=22419-IMG_8516.jpg

We were forced to retreat indoors from a gale force wind that was blowing over the drink stations.
It's all good fun.

I had dinner last night at U&Steak. Really nice food and gigantic servings, with every dish delivered with a huge amount of salad.
The plates are quite literally 3 times the normal size.
They have another restaurant out near Phayao university, and another in Nan, called the same. All can be found on Facebook searching for U&Steak.
I highly recommend this place for a great meal.
I had the pork “tenderloin in the fillet mignon, french” for 389 thb, and my wife had the “grill salmon steak” for 289 thb. My tenderloin was the whole strap, and the size of a small roast!

The restaurant is a couple of doors down the street and on the same side, from the Gateway Hotel, heading towards the bus station.

The only downside was they didn’t sell Leo Beer!!!

I haven’t been to that one Gav. John who was working at the Phayao city restaurant when I ate there, told me about the other 2 branches.

P W Nature Farmers is a great farang food restaurant in Phayao. Maybe the only one in fact. Peter and Won who own and run it are great people, who serve really good food at very affordable prices.

3593B751-C051-4F0E-9ED5-7DEA570A46C3.jpeg

Won makes beautiful all natural fruit smoothies, as well as bakes her own cheesecakes, usually with a different flavour each week.
Peter does homemade lasagne and a great chicken parmigiana, along with all the other fantastic items on their menu. He also makes his own sausages which are as good as you will find anywhere.

They also make, bottle, and sell their own label apple cider vinegar (I believe they also supply Rimping markets in Chiang Mai), natural honey, sesame seed oil, all healthy and off the farm. They also bake their own bread as well...delicious!

They are open from 1100 each Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. So if you are in the area and feeling hungry give them a try. I highly recommend their place. It is located at the following map reference:

Good food, service & expat company.
I can also vouch for the apple cider vinegar, home delivered to Chiang Khong.

Mae Ka Luang.... Really nice elevated, cool shady setting on the eastern side side of Hwy1, across from Phayao University

A great place to eat some delicious cake and admire the scenery (including University phu-yings)

Perhaps an interesting east-west deviation for returning Chiang Mai-ites (from Nan area) via winding bitumen ghost-roads through the rubber tree and corn fields from the 1251 across to the Mae-Tam Reservoir (just SE of Mae Ka Luang)

All old customers are especially welcome at the new location.
When they were forced to move, they sadly lost all their walk in trade from the location by the lake.
Consequently they are struggling a bit and don't carry a lot of stock food items as before; however if you are prepared to wait a little they will prepare a breakfast to the same yummy standard as before.
If you're a group you can help by booking in advance, at least an hour, so they can prepare.
Tel: 086 798 2445
Cup cake has excellent service, home cooking, and good English for interesting discussions and information.
Let's all cheer the good guys.
Location 100 metres from Wat Ratcha Khruet.
