I rode up to Thoed Thai with David stopping for 2nd breakfast at the sunshine in Tha Ton

As always the ride up there is enjoyable and for the most part uneventful. We stopped along the way here and there to enjoy the views

273637=6458-IMG_6743.jpg

The parade was scheduled to start at 4.00pm but at the given hour, people were ony just beginning to assemble.

273637=6459-IMG_6763.jpg

The delay gives the marchers a bit of time to show off their dress and practice a bit

273637=6460-IMG_6751.jpg

273637=6461-IMG_6756.jpg

273637=6462-IMG_6760.jpg

273637=6463-IMG_6767.jpg

and so things are slowly coming together to get the show on the road

273637=6464-IMG_6754.jpg

273637=6465-IMG_6770.jpg

273637=6466-IMG_6776.jpg

but there is still a further delay as the top table is not ready that the other end, so its down tools and take a break

273637=6467-IMG_6785.jpg

273637=6468-IMG_6787.jpg

and get some practice in

273637=6469-IMG_6804.jpg

but some just wait patiently and it gives a chance for the elders to have a smoke and reflect on the year just passing

273637=6470-IMG_6805.jpg

273637=6471-IMG_6809.jpg

As the sun was by this time getting very low and our throats rather dry, we retired to the strategically located restaurant up the road along the parade route. Soon enough the parade came along

273637=6473-IMG_6816.jpg

273637=6474-IMG_6819.jpg

273637=6475-IMG_6820.jpg

273637=6476-IMG_6831.jpg

273637=6477-IMG_6822.jpg

273637=6478-IMG_6834.jpg

273637=6479-IMG_6838.jpg

and into the main event area as darkness came and the party got underway

273637=6480-IMG_6841.jpg

Food everywhere of course and there seemed to be many more attendees than last year

273637=6481-IMG_6845.jpg

273637=6482-IMG_6854.jpg

Some just know how to party

273637=6483-IMG_6856.jpg

273637=6484-IMG_6858.jpg

Its not that David is really THAT tall you understand

273637=6485-IMG_6862.jpg

Loads of different shows from different surrounding villages and folk

273637=6486-IMG_6873.jpg

273637=6487-IMG_6880.jpg

273637=6488-IMG_6883.jpg

John from the Rim Tan takes up his duty as a village elder to show appreciation for all the efforts of the performers

273637=6489-IMG_6894.jpg

later catching up with an old mate

273637=6490-IMG_6898.jpg

directing him to a table of more friends and Leo

273637=6491-IMG_6891.jpg

but the MC is keen to keep the stage raging

273637=6492-IMG_6895.jpg

and at midnight the fireworks and lanterns take over although this year the fireworks were not at the intensity level of last year, so at least this year we didn't catch fire

273637=6493-IMG_6902.jpg

273637=6494-IMG_6904.jpg

Back at the beer table its getting a bit nippy but heaters were provided

273637=6495-IMG_6911.jpg

As always at these events everyone is having a great time relaxing, being with friends and just enjoying the evening. Smiling faces everywhere.....

273637=6496-IMG_6913.jpg

273637=6497-IMG_6918.jpg

For me, these people command a great deal of respect. Mostly Shan with no status, no ID, no passport but they seem always happy and for sure make the most of what they have.
I'll be back next year.

I love those Shan dances. Although the music can be so monotone, the movements of the girls fingers are sooo nice to watch
