Suspicious that an experienced rider would go down that badly with no evidence of another vehicle, road hazard, in the middle of the day etc. Sounds like the bike had been sitting around un-ridden for a while. Has anyone checked it for any sort of mechanical seizure, tread separation?

Very, very sad indeed in the prime of life. Never got to meet him, but condolences to friends and family especially the kids. Tragic.
Yes ...could be a bike mechanical faliure ....rear wheelbearings, tyres ,seizures....I saw a fairly new HD go down in front of me near Phuket in 2002 ..fortunately the rider survived ...later it was found that the rear wheel had seized due to incorrect assembly by Thai importer!!!!

Extremely sad thing to hear, my sincerest condolences to his loved ones.

Pure speculation but my instinct would be to think there was probably another vehicle involved which did the customary hit/near hit and run.

We can only speculate on the cause of the accident, but I don't think it's going to be a good idea with pages of speculative ideas from everyone with 25 satang (ala Thaivisa.)

Let's just respectfully wait & see if any news comes out. And that news should go here

In the meantime this thread is for condolences & tributes for Simon.

RIP Simon, and condolences to his family.

I found out a local biker had been killed yesterday but it was only this thread that made me realize it was siinthai. Just brings it closer to home.

Damn damn damn.........I just met Simon for the first time ten days ago when he passed through Chiang Mai on his way south. I was thinking what a class guy he was, and I was looking forward to meeting up with him again in Phuket. What a terrible tragedy. My condolences to his family.

I'm deeply saddened by Simon's early demise. Our warmest condolences go to his family and friends. Makes you think about having your bike inspected again at the beginning of the Thai riding season, doesn't it?

RIP, Simon!

Siomn was one of my closest riding buddies here in Thailand. I bought my XR 400 from him when he wanted the 440 and was going to ride back with him from Chang Mai when he bought the Twin, but could not make that happen. I rode with him and Noel on the Sat before his accident. I am deeply saddened by the event, and can't truly believe that he is gone.

We had great trips planned, and he was the best at just sitting and shooting the shit. I miss him immensely, but that is just selfish as he leave behind two lovely children Harley and Ally. I am sure they will miss him a ton.

He died doing what he loved. It is a huge loss, and the world is a much darker place without him walking it. I rode one of the rides we use to ride yesterday and thought of him around every turn.

If anyone in Thailand wants to get together and ride, talk or just remember Simon over coffee or a beer, Please contact me. I have lost a great friend, and would love the chance to remember him in the way he was; A great friend and the best riding buddy anyone could ever ask for.

A Simon Grant Memorial Ride is defiantly in order, I just need a bit more time before I can sort it out. I miss you brother!

Oh my goodness- What terrible tragic news!
My sincere condolences to Simon's family and friends.
Rest in Peace Simon.

Pikey

I've just got back from a week on the road in Cambodia and heard this tragic news from Bungy this morning. It's been on my mind all day during the drive back to Chiang Mai and I have just read the previous posts.

I am utterly shocked and devastated having shared a beer with Simon in the pic above less than 3 short weeks ago. It's all been said, but my sincerest and deepest condolences to all of Simon's family and friends, especially the kids and for him to be taken when he was obviously in the prime of his life and enjoying it immensly is such a cruel twist of fate.

First TJ, now Simon. Noel, Tina and all the Phuket riders, my heart goes out to you guys and whilst I cannot attend any local ceremonies, I will be sure to be at a wat here in Chiang Mai at 12:00 to remember Simon. If any Chiang Mai riders care to join me, I'll be at Wat Lok Molee on Maninoperat Rd (north leg of the moat) just before midday tomorrow.

R.I.P mate - you were a joy to know and ride with and you are already sadly missed.

Pikey.

It was devastating to read that Simon is no longer amongst us. I bought my XR 440 from Simon, he was an outstanding honest guy and will be missed by many.

My deepest condolences to his family and all of his friends.

Rest in Peace Simon.

Simon would have been pleased with the final farewells that have taken place over the last 4 days.
CIMG3273.jpg

Nick (Simon's brother) and Julie (Nick's wife) had flown in from Zimbabwe and Fred, (Julie's brother-in-law) came from Perth. It was was really nice to meet some of Simon's family.

CIMG3275.jpg

The "Blessing Prayers" at Wat Tharua we're held on Monday and Tuesday evening with many people paying their respects. Lots of flowers surrounded the casket and their was a great picture of Simon smiling at us all with one of his 'cheeky grins'.

CIMG3257.jpg

Friends had started a "Memories" book which is to keep all the messages of condolences, photos, emails, letters etc for Simon's children Harley and Alley to read later in their lives. Condolences posted on the GT site were forwarded to the lady compiling the book.

Simon was cremated at Wat Tharua on Wednesday 28th October. A beautiful sunny day with many of Simon's friends from all 'chapters of his life'.

(Noel, Nick, Tina Marieke, Lies, Tony)

On Thursday, 29th October, a flotilla of 15 boats escorted Simon's ashes to be cast into Phang Nga Bay off the east coast of Phuket. Another glorious day, with the sun shining, and a gentle breeze blowing as we said our final farewell to our great and dear friend Simon.

Nick, Julie and Fred (Simon's family) would like to thank all the GT-Riders for their messages of condolences.

Peter it was a bitter sweet experience with differing waves of emotion through all his friends present. Shared sadness and laughter, soul searching and reminiscing......above all goodwill and generosity. Simon would have been chuffed.
It was a great reminder of the need to service friendships...Simon always did. He was a dynamic kinda guy.
