On 16-12-07, some friends entered Laos at Veun Kham, coming from Stung Treng on Cambo registered bikes.

Laos side still very casual and no paperwork/insurance issued for the bikes.

thanks for that, I'm looking at crossing there end of Feb likely on a VN registered bike...will get my Laos visa in Bangkok. Does one still need to get a permit in Stung Treng to head up there?

My friends that went through last month didnt need a permit from Stung Treng.

They toured throughout Laos without permits or insurance that is usually issued at the more formal border entries.

Personally, I would be looking to get legit at Pakse , if possible, or entering at Thakek where all the required paperwork is available at the border, and they let bikes enter
