You could be forgiven for getting confused finding your way to Wat Huay Pla kang
But once you do get there, there is no mistaking the place - it is massive. And on a BIG scale.
A massive chedi of multiple storeys with various statues of the Guan Yin Buddha on every level.
Guan Yin is the bodhisattva of compassion, revered by Buddhists as the Goddess of Mercy. Her name is short for Guan Shi Yin. Guan means to observe, watch, or monitor; Shi means the world; Yin means sounds, specifically sounds of those who suffer. Thus, Guan Yin is a compassionate being who watches for, and responds to, the people in the world who cry out for help.
A view from the first floor looking down on worshippers
Some Guan Yin Buddha images on the 9 floors
It is an incredible collection of beautiful Buddha images..
Next door a new Ubosot being built
plus a 23 storey Guan Yin Buddha image.
Yes that's right - 23 storeys high. Check out the size of the tower crane.
The view from the "Guan Yin Chedi"
Confirmation of the size of that 23 storey Guan Yin Buddha image
Pra Ajarn Phob Chok is the famous abbot of Wat Huay Pla Kang & he has been a monk for a mere 15 years, starting off in Ratchaburi before moving to Chiang Rai.
He has plans for building another 108 small Buddhist chedis North of Chiang Rai at a cost of 1 million baht each..
So where is Huay Pla Kang?
It is close to Chiang Rai town, just north of the Kok River.
From Chiang Rai city you can take either of bridges in town & head north. One the new bridge by the police station or two, downstream past the Rim Kok Resort. Either of these will link up with R1207, the Mae Yao / Huay Mae Sai waterfall road. When you hit R1207 turn let & you will soon strat seeing signs for Hua Pla Kang temple. Once you get to thr right turn off, on the right hnad side it is only 1.5 kms north of R1207.
Check it out sometime. You can't miss it - although I did for a long time.
