Planned to start an Atm thread for Lao banks the last few days.
Lao bank withdrawal limits.
BFL and ANZ allow up to 2 million kip at one transaction. 40,000 kip charge.

The other banks Atm allow only 1 million kip per transaction and still charge you 40000 kip. You can repeat and take out another 1 million and another 40,000 kip charge.

If possible. Use BFL or ANZ and save yourself 40,000 kip in transaction charges.

2. Bangkok bank Atm cards with chip technology won't work in Lao Atm's

Feel free to add any other relevant information or corrections where appropriate.

Cheers

Slight correction. The other bank Atm that only allow 1 million kip withdrawal will charge you 20,000 kip per transaction. So you can take another 1 million and pay a second 20,000 kip.

The main benefit of using BFL and ANZ taking out 2 million is that you will only get one fee from your home bank rather than two fees.

Cheers

For those of us living in Thailand.
We will all be using Atm cards with chips by 2019.
According to the article. The chipped cards only work with your bank Atm's. A high percentage. But not other banks at present
Assuming the chipped cards still don't work in Lao as David experienced. Best take lots of cash.

Chip bank cards the rule in 2019

Any idea if you show up at a Bangkok bank in Laos with ATM card, bank book, and passport will they allow you to make a withdrawal at the teller window ? Have both Bangkok Bank and Siam Commercial accounts here.

No idea. But you do see people going in performing over the counter transactions with cards.

Bank card and passport should be sufficient. If they won't let you withdraw from debit card try visa card cash advance.
But the issue in the article is with Atm's so hopefully an over the counter trip will work.

As you have scb card you will be fine for the time being. Only as and when the new cards come on line until the Atm's can read them and work with other bank Atm's

Cheers

No I don't believe you can use a Thai Bangkok bank book in Laos, or any other foreign country.
The solution for me has been to get two Bangkok Bank ATM cards - a magnetic strip card for Laos + a new chip card for Thailand.
