Hi David,
I will throw in a few thoughts.
Last Wednesday is nice simple idea and already accepted by some, so Wed 30th works
Bearing in mind this is the first one,and I think the majority of potential attendess are in CM area, I suggest somewhere in between CK and CM works as maybe not a time when people are on extended tours and for me it would be up on Wednesday night for the dinner and back next day. The further away destinations may be better after the event established and not in hot wet season. Also Chiang Khong is a much visited destination, which I think we have all been to many times and I am sure would make a good later venue after some of your smaller towns have been tried. I have never stayed in the following places, which are in between us:
Chiang Dao, maybe a bit too near CM
Thaton, maybe ideal
Pong
Chiang Kham
Chiang Muan
I cannot offer any suggestions for eating or sleeping in any of these places, which is maybe part of the idea??

DM Salong is well liked and maybe easier to find accommodation now rather than high season. A safe option for sleeping and eating
These places are all also not so far from Chiang Rai, so if people want to go check that out on night before or after, easy to do

OK I'm easy. Lets make it Tha Ton
Wednesday 30th May.

Hi Guys and Gals,

Anyone else willing to commit to this dinner, now only a week away.
I will show you mine if you will show me yours as it were.
An expression I have not used for many a year, not being a gambler that is.
Or to put it another way, I will go if a handful of others willing to gather also??

Well thats at least 4 people, almost a handful. Seems to be great riding weather, deep blue clean skies, thundery clouds, green scenery, mostly good clean roads following some heavy rainfall

Sorry guys, but I do not see the fun in a ride to Thaton just for the dinner, when there are so few attending. Will keep an open mind about the next one in June, but will not be at this one

I have noticed that many Thai women seem to be convinced that you cannot ride anywhere in the rain.
They appear to have a blind conviction that because it is raining "here" & "now", it must be like that all over the country. They sometimes attempt to convince me of this fallacy. But, you only have to look at the Thai Meteorological dept's website and the radar loops, to understand that this is never the case.
Rainy season is one of the best times to ride on the road. The scenery is so beautiful and the air so fresh, after the rain.
The country I come from, if I was concerned about rain, would never have started riding bikes. It was cold rain there, too.
I have just finished rebuilding my '59 Triumph Thunderbird and it is looking beautiful. Unfortunately, it won't look as good after a ride in the rain, but........
bikes are for riding...... I'll see you guys in Thaton, tonight.

Thanks Ian.
I put new valve guides and springs in, better rocker boxes and new piston rings / honed bores. So, regained some lost power and the bike starts easier. Plus, had the barrel and head powdercoated black satin by Richco (Thanks Guys).
At the moment, no oil leaks......... we'll see how long that lasts..... 555.

For me the ride was green, cool & no rain = I laughed all the way to Tha Ton.

An old mate of mine Steve Merchant, living just north of Tha Ton, joined us for happy hour drinks.

Late at night we also hooked up with Noah from BBT, Big Big Tours for a serious chat & some frivolity. He's a good guy & top motorcycle tour guide.

It was a fun, relaxed, very pleasant evening. We will continue wit this format rain, hail or shine. The idea being to go for a ride & meet up with mates in a smaller quieter town for a nice evening talking bikes, trips & life in Thailand. Riders can plan their own route & ride at their own pace. We just meet up in a quiet town somewhere for a night, then go our own separate ways again the next day.

The next GTR Upcountry Rendezvous Ride & Dinner is Wednesday 27th of June 2018. The rendezvous town to be advised.

Yes, Nice one. A very pleasant evening indeed. Thanks guys.
I had a few light spots of rain on the way over, not worth stopping for.
Next day was glorious. I rode out of Thaton and up into the mountains over Wawi and onto Doi Chang, for coffee.... of course.
It was cold and misty in the morning, and I only had T shirt and leather on. Beautiful scenery when the clouds parted. I rode all day around Chiang Rai and back home, didn't get rained on at all.
