Bike Hire Chiang Mai?

Hi, i am looking into the possibility of hiring a motorcycle in January and taking aroad trip up north. I have seen a number of tour companies that operate from Chiang Mai, however, i would rather hire a bike independently. Could anyone recommend the best bike for the job? and possible outlets? also would i need to hire a guide? any suggested itineraries would also be a great help, i would have about 14/16days..

If only i had taken time to navigate around the site properly first i would have answered my own questions (i am currently chastising myself for being a tosser!). The site is great and very informative, i look forward to arriving in january, hiring a bike and seeing where the road takes me. If you see a 5' nothing pomme with a skinhead/tattoos looking lost at the roadside please help...
