Just a tip to avoid R1129 Chang saen - Chiang Khong on the Chiang Saen side of the mountain "Kiu Khan."

The road is being widened & is full of potholes & in the wet covered in slurry - potholes connected by slurry. If it rains you cant see how deep the potholes are - which ones to hit or miss.
My travel time last Sunday was 1 hr 40 minutes for the 54 kms = not much fun at all.
Once you are on the Chiang Khong Mekong side of Kiu Khan the road is ok, but the CHiang Saen side sure as hell sucks big time.

Sorry no photos I was too cranky & busy concentrating.

Ive been taking the 4007 when going from Chiang Saen to Chiang Khong.
Its a beautiful ride following the Mekong, on a road with very little traffic.

Taking the 4007, would also cut out some of the 1129 road works.

Its not like this all the way, and there is a few rough spots, but I much prefer it.

February 2018 & it is almost finished with only a couple of kilometres left to be resurfaced.

The unfinished sector is going up the hill to the Hmong village of Kiu Kan, on the Chiang Khong side.

Now dare I say but I predict R1290 north of Chiang Khong will end up being the # 1 bikers race track for scratching.

I've never felt so exhilarated after a ride for years! This road is amazing now. Better than anything out there in the North. Wide, steep undulating, swooping, blind hill crests & magnificent stunning panoramic views of the Mekong. The Huai Sai Mann viewpoit - Chiang Khong sector is a total adrenalin rush.

The mountain sides are still being worked on

GTR- IMG_0725.JPG

You have to work at it.
GTR- IMG_0727.JPG

Having ridden the Huai Sai Mann - Chiang Khong sector again today, there's no doubt the best direction to go is from Huai Sa Mann - to Chiang Khong. This way the Khong is on the left & you get the sweeping panoramic views as you go, cresting hils & coming out of the fabulous corners.

The best bit is heading towards Chiang Khong & cresting that Huay Meng hill with a slight change of direction.
Enjoy. This going to be the best one to have a bit of fun on.

Found A few pictures from 4 years ago very near the E-view Coffee stop heading towards Chiang Khong.

Stopped because a group of Chinese cars had just left the "View" and 1 of the group was on the wrong side of the road and hit a Thail Pickup head on.

The police were in attendance and made sure the Thail driver was taken away first by the Ambulance.
But you can see how narrow the roads were then.
Was still a great road to ride but is better now and with no Chinese cars about?
