Phoukhoune is best known as a leg-stretching and eating stop as it is about halfway between Vientiane and Phonsavan or Luang Prabang. Most of the shops, houses, the hospital and the district offices are perched on the mountain side. I guess they are running out of space as the last few times I was there they were moving a mountain into the valley.
Just a bit south of Phoukhoune a new track has been carved out of the mountain which leads to a Buddha statue on one of the hills. Quite a steep climb but tremendous 360 degree views from there when it is clear. The access is right next to the Petrotrade gas station south of town.
