Can anybody body provide an update on entering Laos via Huay Kon / Muang Ngeun?

If I get a Laos visa in advance, does anyone forsee any issues entering on a bike?

Also an update on the Hongsa to Luang Prabung route would be appreciated if possible.

Thanks

The first part of my question was answered in trip reports as I typed it. Thanks

Can insurance be purchased at the border?

Is Hongsa to Luang Prabung doable on a road bike (via the most direct route)?

By "bike," you mean motor or pedal?? In either case, not a problem if:

-- have the proper customs papers for the 2-wheeler;

-- and a Lao visa in your passport.

It's about one km from Huey Khon to the Lao border gate, don't ask me why. Insurance place is right there after the gate on the left. It's another few meters to Lao Immigration and Customs in a building up on your right.

Two routes on to Luang Prabang:

-- more common and longer is from Hong Sa SE down to Sayaboury, then north to the Mekong crossing at Thaduea-M. Nan, then on to LP;

-- other, shorter and reportedly much rougher, is straight on from Hong Sa and ENE to Xieng Mene crossing and LP. Best to ask around there at Hong Sa as this soon after the rains might be a tad difficult. Haven't seen any recent reports here.

And I've put some photos of our Xieng Lom & Hong Sa trip last February up here: http://picasaweb.google.com/mactbkk/200 ... LomHongSa#

Have fun, and please, a trip & road report when you're on to a PC.

Give it a miss. Single track in the middle. You might want to look here

I dont know anything about your experience or riding, but I'd suggest play it safe & go in via Houei Xai if you have not ridden in Laos before.

Hello.

I could cross this border on 10/11/2009 by Thai bike. No problem! (I am Korean so I don't need VOA )

Good on ya. And on a Honda Wave, yet.

Please, when you get the time, post some comments on your trip from Hong Sa to LP via the "short route," and photos, too. Am very interested to hear how the "road" is now, soon after the rainy season.
