Camp 71 - 71 Export.

Located 5 km south of Mae Chan on the east side of R1, Camp 71 is a sprawling hybrid cafe-restaurant-bar-campground for bikers or campers.

A small collection of classic cars adorns the frontage.

In a sprawling complex with multiple buildings and doors, navigating the site can be confusing.

The coffee shop-restaurant is outstanding, air-conditioned, and has multiple seating options.

Looking at this TV, I thought, I wonder what it would be like to watch MotoGP there on a Sunday?

Overall the place is quite impressive, and you could spend half a day eating, drinking, taking photos, & wandering around.

Amazing find David, need to go there next time i'm near Mae Chan ......

Wat Phra That Sam Mum Muang - Golden Triangle- Chiang Saen.

On the prowl for a massive new buddha statue that I heard was being erected at the GT, I took off straight up to the GT.

It should be right next to Wat Phrat Phu Khao at the GT, just up that incredible steep little concrete road to the other chedi on the hillock next door, and it should stand out from afar I thought. You can't miss it.

But nope not there, or anywhere I looked.
I should know better than relying on the old GTR fellah's memory for the article & location.

I'd blown it by not paying enough attention.
So, I made do Wat Phra That Sam Mum Muang.

Not many people venture up to this "higher wat" as they are often satisfied with Wat Phra That Phu Khao, but it certainly has a higher elevation & stunning view.

There are panoramic views of the Mekong both up & downstream.

Sop Ruak & Chiang Saen downstream.

Caution.

Should any rider venture up there, please exercise extra caution on that steep tight last sector between the two chedis. Particularly returning to Wat Phra That Phu Khao, as that last extremely tight steep corner is a killer!
A much safer option to might be to use road:
Enjoy, there's still a massive new Buddha out there somewhere nearby, looking at you.
