FREE Non Commercial GPS Map - Garmin

Why?

After our recent trip to Sangkhaburi we were asked for the tracks by many people.
This really was an epic trip and certainly generated a lot of interest..

Last count 8,000 ++++ views
The Missing Link- Sangkhlaburi to Umphang and back!

Rather than have the tracks end up in a commercial (for profit) GPS map.
We thought it was only right to contribute these GT Rider tracks with the other tracks available in OSM, benefitting the wider riding community.

All of the trails we rode are in the map. Including where we managed to get a bit lost on the other side of the border.

The map data is up to May 27th 2013.

You can download the gps map from this URL
http://rapidshare.com/files/1684373388/osm_generic_gmapsupp.zip

Map includes - Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.
The link to make the map is so easy.. decided no harm in adding these other countries.. Total size 69.6 MB

We will endeavour to post an updated GPS map every month or two for those that would prefer to download here.

This is our first bash at this.. Constructive feedback / comments welcome.

Cheers
Brian

The permissions were set incorrectly to download the file.. This should be fixed now :)

Hi
I am going to China, Yunnan next month. It looks like many of the roads in Yunnan are on this map. Any idea how reliable they are?
I will track this trip on a Montana and a Photo tracker. Will upload those if you are interested!

And thank you very much for the map and the work you put in. Beers on me if our paths ever lead us to the same water hole!

Hi Tony, Oddvar,

Good to see you have joined the dark side Tony.

When we meet up next I can give you a 30 min intro to uploading tracks to OSM etc.
Nothing difficult but like anything. Once you know it is easy.

Oddvar,
In all honesty.
One could argue better than the commercial maps as the data isn't static waiting for the commercial provider to update when it makes commercial sense.

The main thing I see is some data may be off a bit due to the device being used. Phone, GPS logger or decent Garmin,

Beauty of OSM is. When we see that we can update it straight away and it is in the database almost immediately. Accurate information ready for the next download.

Like anything. Good to have a back up. Paper map for your destination
If you want a back up OSM on your phone in case your GPS goes Kaput check out OSMAND
Free and commercial to support the project.. 200 + baht = Good deal

OsmAnd+ Maps and Navigation

No worries on the beer and of course happy to meet up.
Happy and enjoy this, nice to give something back.

Cheers
Brian.

I'm new to basecamp as well and haven't played with it much. I'm sure you know you can install the map directly to your GPS without bothering with basecamp? I've found tons of useful guides on YouTube. Here's one which addresses your question:

If I want to update and contribute some new tracks and POI to your maps file, how to do it? Any step to follow, please guide.
Thank you.

I tend to use Potlatch.. Still consider myself in the learner stages.
It is pretty easy when you know how.. Just like everything in life :)

Please do contribute.. The more contributors the better and more accurate the data will be.

Good stuff Ian.

Judging by some of the rambling you do on the KLX..
You should have some nice new contributions for OSM.
Something we can all use to go and check out :)

Cheers
