At the weekly talad nut at Ban Chambong downstream from Chiang Khong I noticed numerous Hmong stalls selling new year costumes, so enquired about Hmong New Year.

The reply was that around Wiang Kaen Hmong New Year 2019 will be 6/7 January 2019.

This roughly aligns with the new moon, so it may actually be possible some other Hmong villages maybe celebrating around new moon in December too - Laos? Keep an eye out for it.

I was fortunate to be in Phonsavan for the Hmong New year in 2013, and it remains one the highlights of my riding trips in Laos.

Hmong new Year is starting in the Chiang Khong - Wiang Kaen - Phu Chi Fah - Chiang Kham area now.

On R1155 Ban Saithong has a big one: Google Maps

Closer to Phu Chi Fah, Ban Huai Khu is supposed to be hosting a big one. Huai Khu is on the Nong Tao - Huai San - Phu Chi Fah road.

The road to Huai Leng is super steep and has amazing views for the adventurous.
