I guess this could well explain Ivo's recent drama with his Honda CB500:

Honda recalls CB500 motorcycles over oil leak

http://motorbikewriter.com/honda-recalls-cb500-motorcycles-oil-leak/

The recall notice says that due to “an incorrect procedure during manufacture” of the rocker arm shaft sealing bolt, it may come loose causing oil to leak from the CB500’s engine. “If the oil leak is undetected or unrepaired, loss of engine oil could cause engine failure or seizure,” the recall notice says.

Owners of all Thai-made CB500 models are being asked to contact their Honda dealer to arrange for a bike inspection and the bolt replaced “as soon as possible”.

The bikes affected are:

CBR500RA – MLHPC44U0D5000001 TO MLHPC44UXD5000829
CBR500R – MLHPC44U0D5000189 TO MLHPC44U9D5000773
CB500F – MLHPC44U2D5000012 TO MLHPC45U3D5000248

No it would not explain my CB500F drama. But thanks for the idea.

First of all this is a external leaking as the Rocker-shaft will more or less fall out. You will see that! And you will see the oil leaking along the engine and on the floor. There are actually many stories on internet about this already. First was thought (and told to me by A.P. Honda Co. Ltd.) that it was due to not tightened of the sealing bolt. But more research on internet learns that people find out that they (Thai Manufacturing Co. Ltd.) actually added a washer / seal to the bolt to prevent the bolt get loose. This as people compared old & new models of it. So did they just forget that in the first place?

Secondly my VIN# of MLHPC-4570-E-5200015 does not seem to fit this or .... ??

As far as I know owners of CB500 models in Thailand are not asked anything. Recalls in Thailand?

Thanks Mbox .... my conversations with CB500 owners is from before the date of this letter and my CB500 was from after the production date so it seems logic I have never seen this letter. At least it show that A.P. Honda Co. Ltd. is actively doing something about the worldwide recall.

you've got to check your Bikes Serial Number against the ones mentioned for CB500X . starts with PC44E-61 ....
My CB500X is in a different range of numbers.

I've just sold my bike and was about to order a new CB500X from Big Wing Bangkok - but there's been a couple of reports of oil loss issues and this recall. Any views on buying now or waiting 'till any issues are sorted and people have put more miles on this new design?

Thanks!

But have you considered the Suzuki V-Strom 650,

that's what I would be going for over a Versys now.
19 inch front wheel
V-Twin motor - torque
+ better all round spec over the Versys.

Saw that bike in person last week and it looks very well built. It's a large bike. Feels very spacious. Price was 350k I believe. I would take the vstrom very serious if was in the market for this kind of bike. Love the 19 inch front wheel.

Many thanks David and Tony.

Good info, I am waiting to see the opening of the dealers shops as the Suzuki version of the Honda BigWing set up (preferably without the numerous stories of poor service).

The Kawasaki dealer near me in Udon Thani has a good reputation and I used have them before to get parts for my old VN 900, at the moment the Versys is a safer bet but I can wait a bit.

There is a shop in CM who "convert" CB500x to a Dakar style with either 19" or 21" front wheels, and a Dakar style fairing?
Will see if I can get some pictures..
