After seeing how hard it would be to import put together bike, that seems to be a nono. Taking bikes apart prior to shipping seems to be an option. Has anyone investigated purchasing a bike in a box and putting it together once it gets there? If so how would the txes apply in this case? Just attempting to get a fair sized bike there at least cost.

Stop dreaming, & thinking that you will know better & can outsmart the system.
If it was that easy to sneak bikes in, get them registered hundreds of guys would be doing it, but it just does not work that way.
So buy local & save your self heaps of time, effort & even money in the long run.
Not even riding bikes in across the border is worthwhile in the long run. One local expert I know who's been doing it for quite a while now says no more - not worth the hassle taking them in & out all the time.
So the advice is buy local & get on the road riding asap.

But again at the end of the day - buy local & go with the flow, to work in with the system.
