Great job gtmaru.
How many km's was the trip in total?
The road in the 1st photo after the maps must have been a hand full on the wave. Were was that?
Im doing a similar ride right now, was to get to cambodia 2 weeks ago but Ive been getting side tracked. 8)

Thanks for the report, though I cant get the last 15 photos for some reason.

Wow, a real long run! Love the mud, not.

Could you please post a bit of a narrative on a portion of the trip, eg:

-- Pak Beng west to the Pak Neuy area, and the crossing to the south side of the Mekong there.

-- How's the road now from that crossing point on down south to Muang Nguen? Was under construction in February.

-- The road from Hong Sa to Huey Xing was reported to be OK in February but the Hong Sa folks said really rough from there on east to Xieng Men, across from Luang Prabang. How now?

This is from the Thorn Tree travel forum and was posted by Rowbare who apparently works in Hongsa - posted on 3 March 2009

We just took the Luang Prabang to Hongsa road directly across from the main boat landing in town. Single car ferry across the Mekong. Using a 4 wheel toyota landcruiser type and we'll be using this road more often now, that is, until the rainy season when we have to go back to using a boat from Tha Suang.

We took the road this past Monday again and I paid attention this time. Up the hill and past the bus station at the first Y we kept to the right. After a while there was another Y with two little signs in blue - we took the road to the left. The road is not all that bad in the LP province - hard gravel, much less dust than on the Say-Hongsa road.

The further you go the less villages there are and the more trees you see. Lots of pockets of trees in bloom - red flowers, white flowers - right now.

Two hours along and the road is more or less just two tire tracks but easy to follow. At some points the road along the side of the hills is just about the size of the car. (I'm sure the amount of trees in the drop would slow your fall).

Once on the Sayaboulli side the road is dustier and bumpy, number of villages increase and the amount of trees decrease. In three hours we passed one truck and one car.

You come out about 15 minutes south of Hongsa on the Sayaboulli road. We crossed about seven or eight creeks/streams along the way so I'm sure this is a dry season route only. I did notice some dried elephant dung along the way also. I forgot to clock the kilometers but I'm guessing 140 since we seemed to be averaging 40 kph (versus 30 kph on the Sayaboulli road).
