Well thats at least 4 people, almost a handful. Seems to be great riding weather, deep blue clean skies, thundery clouds, green scenery, mostly good clean roads following some heavy rainfall

"Four's a crowd" is the old saying I believe John. We're all good to go.

Sorry guys, but I do not see the fun in a ride to Thaton just for the dinner, when there are so few attending. Will keep an open mind about the next one in June, but will not be at this one

As I've been riding in the rain for 2 days hurrying back from darkest Esarn to be there on time, a bit of rain on the last day won't bother me. I will be present.

I have noticed that many Thai women seem to be convinced that you cannot ride anywhere in the rain.
They appear to have a blind conviction that because it is raining "here" & "now", it must be like that all over the country. They sometimes attempt to convince me of this fallacy. But, you only have to look at the Thai Meteorological dept's website and the radar loops, to understand that this is never the case.
Rainy season is one of the best times to ride on the road. The scenery is so beautiful and the air so fresh, after the rain.
The country I come from, if I was concerned about rain, would never have started riding bikes. It was cold rain there, too.
I have just finished rebuilding my '59 Triumph Thunderbird and it is looking beautiful. Unfortunately, it won't look as good after a ride in the rain, but........
bikes are for riding...... I'll see you guys in Thaton, tonight.

    Thanks Ian.
I put new valve guides and springs in, better rocker boxes and new piston rings / honed bores. So, regained some lost power and the bike starts easier. Plus, had the barrel and head powdercoated black satin by Richco (Thanks Guys).
At the moment, no oil leaks......... we'll see how long that lasts..... 555.

    Wednesday 30th May 2018

Success a cool romantic evening beside the Kok River in Tha Ton
    GTR- IMG_1412.JPG

    4 guys made it
    Ben rode from Mae Sarieng
    Ian rode from Chiang Saen
John Blackie rode from Chiang Mai ia R118 - 109- 107
David Unk rode from Chiang Mai via R107

    GTR- IMG_1413.JPG

For me the ride was green, cool & no rain = I laughed all the way to Tha Ton.

An old mate of mine Steve Merchant, living just north of Tha Ton, joined us for happy hour drinks.
    DSC_2414.JPG

Late at night we also hooked up with Noah from BBT, Big Big Tours for a serious chat & some frivolity. He's a good guy & top motorcycle tour guide.
    DSC_2417.JPG

It was a fun, relaxed, very pleasant evening. We will continue wit this format rain, hail or shine. The idea being to go for a ride & meet up with mates in a smaller quieter town for a nice evening talking bikes, trips & life in Thailand. Riders can plan their own route & ride at their own pace. We just meet up in a quiet town somewhere for a night, then go our own separate ways again the next day.

The next GTR Upcountry Rendezvous Ride & Dinner is Wednesday 27th of June 2018. The rendezvous town to be advised.

Yes, Nice one. A very pleasant evening indeed. Thanks guys.
I had a few light spots of rain on the way over, not worth stopping for.
Next day was glorious. I rode out of Thaton and up into the mountains over Wawi and onto Doi Chang, for coffee.... of course.
It was cold and misty in the morning, and I only had T shirt and leather on. Beautiful scenery when the clouds parted. I rode all day around Chiang Rai and back home, didn't get rained on at all.

June & the last Wednesday of the month is 27th of June.

Lampang is the designated rendezvous town.
Lampang is not really a small out of the way town but.
    • Few riders seem to over night there
    • It's closer to Chiang Mai than Tha Ton & only has one hill to ride over if it is wet.
So let's give that one a try.
    • Please yourself how you get there, which way you ride.
    • Please yourself where you stay.
Let's rendezvous in town somewhere by the river for quiet happy hour, chat & then find a convenient restaurant.
    All easy peasy I reckon.

The "Dual Sport" Rebel will be powering through the R108 roadworks early Wednesday morning, and may need a wash thereafter...
    - I am staying at the Pin Hotel, located a convenient 5 minutes stroll from the Riverside Pub & Restaurant
    - the forecast indicates it would be wise to ensure the umbrella is stowed in the saddlebags!

    Lampang Wednesday 27th June 2018

A dry ride for most people.
    Ben from Mae Sarieng direct
Zoe from Chiang Mai via Wat Chalermprakiet
    Scotty from Chiang Mai direct
    David Unk from Chiang Khong.

I got away late as usual but had a wonderful blast down via Chiang Khong - Thoeng - Chiang Kham - Chun - Phayao - Ngao - Lampang.
Exiting my drive way it was misty rain, but by the time I hit the highway R1020 2 kms away on the outskirts of town it was dry n sunny & stayed that way for the rest of the run to Lampang.
Absolutely awesome riding in the wet season.

The City 2 was my place of stay
    gtr-img_5915-.

    Lampang Accommodation

and the Riverside Pub & Restaurant the rendezvous establishment.
    gtr-img_1653-.

    gtr-img_1657-.

a relaxed memorable night was had by all.
Of note was the brilliant band with an outstanding repertoire of songs
    dsc_2556-.

Stay tuned for the next one - Wednesday 25th July. Ride, eat, drink, chat & enjoy life.

The last Wednesday in July is the 25th of July.

So Pua is the next destination to hook up in for a night - Wednesday July the 25th. It's held mid week for those who can't get away on the weekends.

    Some GTR Pua info

    Pua Accommodation

    Pua Restaurants

How you get there is up to you. There are loads of brilliant loops & rides to do in Nan, before and after.

R1091 is my favourite route to Nan, but Pua is North of Nan, so I will probably go via 1148, but then again...

"The venue" will be one of those places close to the main junction in Pua.
Nothing is more than 700 metres away.
For me I will stay at the Chomphu Phukha Resort, the restaurant there is quite good & it has a view towards the pubs 500 metres away.
I reckon that we will take it from there.
You can't get lost. The Papua Bhukha resort is a bit out of the way so I would not recommend staying there.
I'm in Vientiane now but will head to Pua from here on the "way home."
