JohhnyE I agree with much of what u say but Mobil 1 for cars is fine in Ducatis if they are dry clutch models , I have a Monster S4 and use Mobil 1 or Motul Sythese, but in my wet clutch Monster 750 in UK i always use a Motorcycle specific semisynthetic such as Putoline.

If one reads http://www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/Oils1.html the whole reason for using Rotella(Rimula)is because it has great shear strength and is therefore good for bikes with integral transmissions.

Also in http://www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/Oils1.html the writers opinion is that semisynthetics don't offer anything over conventional oils and are therefore a waste of money.

What I find interesting about this oil thread is that choice of oil/brand seems to be as much a personal issue as it is a scientific one.

George Cels works for Amsoil in USA and dedigns oils for 40 years he runs a thread on DML forum Ducati Monster list, he states time and time again that shear strength and abilty to handle high temp without breakdown are the main factors in good motorcycle oil, so good sythetics are best such as mobil 1 , but that some diesel type synthetics are OK as they have the required qualities, also in air cooled engines that good quality semi synthetic are OK , but that mineral grade synthetic such as shell Advance Ultra are a con , buy real fully synthetic oils Grade IV not the grade III mineral synthetics.
