En route to Rong Kwang for the GTR dinner, I got the chance to check out the road works—widening—on R103.
Both ends of R103 have been turned into 4-lane dual carriageways for over a year now, but the last bit over the mountain divide has remained.
(Phrae & Phayao highlights with son.)
R103 has been a killer road for accidents over the years, with weekly crashes on that twisting, mountainous 10 km old road through the mountains.

I'd heard a few warnings about the roadworks on the old section, that it was a mess and perhaps unsafe in the wet.
But on the day our trip from Chiang Rai to Rong Kwang & return was straightforward, and there was absolutely no issue.
They are preparing to widen the road; all of the old asphalt is still there, & you don't even have to drive or ride on any gravel or dirt road yet!
And if anything, it may already be quicker than the old road, because you can see clearly ahead through many of the corners, unlike before when there were unlimited blind corners.

A bus heading to Chiang Rai from Bangkok and a trailer truck collided in Song district in Phrae province on Tuesday morning, injuring 45 people.
