The Phayao Bypass

upload_2020-8-11_17-45-46.png

As shown on the 2020 GTR Golden Triangle guide map, there is a new bypass for Phayao being constructed to go from R120 Wang Nua / Mae Kachan / Chiang Mai - direct to R1021 Dok Kham Tai & the road to Nan (R1091 from Chun.)

On 7th August 2020 it is getting close to completion.
I took the opportunity to go round the barriers & take a ride along the length of it plus over the bridge, much to the surprise of some of the workers.

Heading east from R1, how the over pass bridge looks

Of note too is that the route # is 1046, but I neglected to get a photo.

Approaching the T-Junction with R1021. Left to Phayao & right to Dok Kham Tai / Chiang Muan / Nan.
But why is the arrow for DKT straight ahead????

My guess in another month it is all ready to go - fully open September 2020?

Cheers everyone.

Now ive noticed this in a few different countries, obviously here and in Australia, why dont they use a single light poles with the double lights on top along the whole length of the highway (as in forefront of photo), instead they choose to use single lights and put them near each other, for each side of the road, as you can see in the distance in the photo below ;)

It would save them a fortune in poles and wiring and installation costs to do it the way I suggest, plus the poles would not be so close to the road......................im sure at night moving the pole closer to the centre of the island as I suggest would have little to no effect on lighting the road ?

And IMO it would look alot nicer

Seems it went up pretty fast? Do you know how long it took maybe?
Thanks for the update!

It’s been going on for about a year if memory serves correctly.

Hi Zed,

They have been building it for over a year now, but it is coming together now. I am not looking forward to the new set of traffic lights at the 1021 end.

There has been talk of an airport being built in Phayao for as long as I can remember. A group of prominent businessmen here have apparantly secured the rights to land for it, but are yet to secure government backing. No one seems to know where it may be, and solid information is hard to nail down on it. However all of a sudden this bypass to nowhere gets built, which may be an indicator of future capital works. If it happens, my money is on the rice paddies adjacent to the 1021 end of the new road.
Centralised within the “Phayao bowl” which allows for standard approaches and departures for commercial aircraft, and more importantly, convenient for me....5555

An update on the bypass....the road surface only lasted about 3-4 weeks before large sections of it needed to be dug out, and resurfacing is currently underway of sections along the length of the bypass.
If you are travelling the road, particularly at night, just be aware of these.
Other than that, it is a great time saver if you are travelling from Chiang Mai through to the Dokkhamtai/Chun area and beyond.

I used this new bypass a month or so ago on a ride down to Chiang Mai and it was great, no issues with the road surface..................I presume there has been alot of rain since and has contributed to the surface failure.......................Im sure there will be some discussions relating to who pays for the resurfacing

And there’s been the first drive through at the northern end of the bypass. It did happen a few weeks back but I only just managed a photo. Whatever vehicle failed to stop at the T-intersection snapped off a couple of the concrete bollards, so they still had some pace up when they impacted.
