rental bike to Laos/Possible?

I am arriving to Bangkok Jan. 9th. Probably will fly to Chaing Mai on Jan. 13th. I would like to rent a bike in Chaing Mai and drive it into Laos for two weeks. Then return it to Chaing Mai.
anyone here done that? What are the problems I can expect at the border? thanks in advance for any advise on this issue.
