Just saw a picture on another forum of a price list from Suzuki Thailand with the 650 V-Strom listed and only 350,000baht! The Versys is due for an upgrade in 2014 but if it doesn't get one this will steal quite a few sales away from Kawasaki.

Yep! It's big news on Thai bike forums!

The little V-strom 650, affectionately called the "Wee-strom" so as to avoid confusion with the V-strom 1000, has always enjoyed positive reviews and is very very similar to the Versys in terms of price and performance.

Here's a fantastic shoot-out between the Versys and Wee-strom from Motorcyclistonline: http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/comparisons/122_1210_2012_kawasaki_versys_vs_2012_suzuki_v_str om_650/viewall.html

I quite like their conclusion:

"In the end, these two middleWeights are perhaps more different than they are similar. The Kawasaki Versys is a poor man’s Ducati Multistrada—an all-day comfortable sportbike in adventurer’s clothing. The Suzuki V-Strom is a working stiff’s BMW GS—a proper adventure-tourer that’s just a set of saddlebags away from circumnavigating the globe. Both are amply supported by the farklemarket for luggage and add-on lights and all the adventure-toury stuff, the Suzuki arguably more so. Which one of these is right for you depends entirely on what you want from a motorcycle.

"

And this is, hands down, the best V-strom "review" on the planet!!! :smile1:

The article says: "The V-Strom feels very “put-together” and “sweet,” with nice, neutral handling. It has a dirtbike feel on pavement but feels like a streetbike in the dirt."

These seems to me to be a bad thing... I would rather have a dirtbike feel on dirt and a streetbike feel on the street. No?

Very interesting and on that Note Check this Report!

Seems like the V-Strom is the Most Popular. It also has a 19inch from Wheel so would be Great for Thailand and Laos etc?

Whitehorse gear have quite a bit of stuff for it!

And so does Twisted Throttle!

The 650 V-Strom has been a massive hit in Australia - the 1000 not so much - depite being very close in price to the 650, and most Aussies looking to 1000cc bikes as soon as their licence allows.

Not sure if the 1000 is less popular because it may be more expensive to register and insure...

A very solid very solid ride, and outsells the Versys 650 by a big margin here, despite a $1,000 price differential...

V-Strom DL650A $AU11,090 (328,661.10 THB)
V-Strom 1000 $Au12,590 (373,114.81 THB)

Kawasaki Versys 650A $Au9,999 (296,361 THB)
Versys 1000 ABS $Au $15,999 (474,133.14 THB)

At the price list I saw a cash price of 350.000 Thai baht, for Thai standards that is a relatively "low" price for a big bike. That would indicate it is made in Thailand.

With a "small" price difference (30k) between the Versys and the V-Strom I would buy a V-Strom (if I was not considering the seat-hight) here in Thailand that is.

Reckon with its 19" front wheel the Wee-Strom would be too tall for you and I wonder if you realize that you'll need to ride it to Bangkok every time it needs service?

Personally I'd love to see if I can make that 19" wheel fit on my Versys, but other than that I can't think of any compelling reason to switch to the slightly heavier and slightly more expensive Wee-Strom.

The Wee has got a bit more torque but a bit less hp than the Versys. Otherwise the bikes are very very similar.

If the Wee is manufactured in Thailand then I expect spares will be cheap and readily available, but if it's an import that would be one more reason to favor the Thai-manufactured Versys.

I know that the 1000 V Strom front wheel will fit on the Versys with a bit of work and reducing the rotor diameter
I looked into this a bit more and the 1000 and 650 front wheels are different, so no hope in getting a local (hopefully cheap) 19" front wheel

Suzuki are in the Process of setting up Nationwide Big Bike Sales and Service Centres. I believe they hope to be in action early next year? They are Selling in Bangkok now and to My knowledge in Chiang Mai Nat from Piston Shop has already Sold 3 or More of the New 650 V-Strom from His shop. He must be acting as an Agent until Suzuki get sorted I guess? They should be a Great Bike for this region! Aussie Gray D has done over 65.000 kms on His over the last few Years and No Problems besides the odd accident so Reliability seems Top Notch! And He has done a lot of Mileage in Laos where the Roads are less than perfect so the Bike takes a bit of a Beating!

As Ian reported earlier, deliveries began in December and they've sold over 30 so far. New Year shot from a mate-

For the guys in Chaing Mai, I understand that Nat at Piston Shop has sold a few, after ordering from Bangkok. So if you're serious about buying one go talk to Nat at Piston Shop.
Gary D on this forum also has one from Oz that he has been riding for "yonks," maybe he will post a photo or two &/or give some info - tips on his bike.

Pop says he has ordered 30 bikes.
Saha Phanich is the appointed Suzuki Big Dealer & should soon have the bikes for sale in Chiang Mai.
But for the time being if you want to rent one go see Pop.

The Thai reply would indicate that the bikes sold in Thailand are manufactured in Japan and not in Thailand as was earlier suggested. This makes the price of the bike even more reasonable.

Got permission from the missus to buy a new bike here in Chiang Mai...went to Suzuki Big Bike on Chotana road, told the salesman (Tony) I wanted to order/buy a 650 VStrom in grey,he took my name and number and said he will call me back after he checked the stock.......no phone call.
So I bought a second hand Versys.
