A glorious view & location. North side & downstream of the Kok River Bridge.
Check it out for a romantic night with the girlfriend (I will be on the next trip with happy go lucky).

This year i been 2 times in the new Newton Guesthouse, it is on the place of the old Kwans Guesthouse, in front of the bridge left side.
Now it is very nice and cheap. The rooms are only 350 baht with TV, hot shower. A big Singha in the restaurant 65 baht, very good and cheap food.
The staff is friendly but speak only a little bite english, better you speak thai with them.

I can second the recommendation for Newton Guesthouse (thanks Helbob). We stayed there a couple of times in November - overnight on the way ooop North, and then for a couple of days for Loy Krathong. It's not as posh as the riverside place, but great value at 350B, with a good little restaurant that's popular with the locals, and friendly folk running the place. Tha Ton was a good choice for the festival, too - plenty going on but not as manic as Chaing Mai. Not quite as keen on the karaoke that started up at about 2am on the festival nights though - there is little sound insulation between the bar/restaurant and the rooms! Luckily we have good earplugs.

We were riding local stylee on a Honda Wave and a Suzuki Exciter (incidentally a surprisingly good little ride with much more ooomf than the Wave), and they got us to bring them in through the restaurant and park them at the back by the rooms. Might be a bit tight for space if you have a big BMW or the like, but nice, safe parking for smaller bikes.

Sadly the GTR favourite in Tha Ton - Apple GH - has closed.

The next best top value up market place is the Saranya River Resort on the south side.
