The New Africa Twin Is a CRF??!?

Back in the late summer of 2013 I wrote a wishful editorial, hoping that the rumored new-generation Africa Twin Honda was reportedly planning to manufacture would not follow the 1200cc trend. The new bike, which we might get to see at the EICMA, seems to live up to those expectations, as the first credible sketches published by the German magazine Motorrad show a liter-class machine.

However, the Africa Twin we all knew and loved is no longer an XRV, but it will most likely wear a CRF badge. So, the Africa Twin XRV750 will be reincarnated in the body of CRF1000 machine. Will it still be the same enduring machine that can travel the world and still work fine? Possibly. One thing is certain, though: a lot of guys will miss the v-twin rumble of old.

Interesting Read there Tony! A Beautiful Sketch in the Article so hope it looks like that! Wouldn't it be Great to see another King Of Adventure Bikes! Most are all Too Big and Heavy in My Eyes? The BMW and Triumph 800 Bikes are the Only ones that come Close to usable?

Agree many of the big "adventure" bikes are far too heavy for any real off-road use. This Honda concept seems to tick a lot of boxes. Fingers crossed it will become reality!

The large manufacturers have completely lost the plot with their 1200 cc " adventure" bikes
that need three people to pick them up when they fall over on a rough road. I would love to
see a lighter weight version of the Africa Twin. Some sized about 500 or 600 cc, and in a v
twin configuration for good low end grunt. And with a weight that a normal person could pick
it up themselves. Would love to see that in the promotional video.......

^ Pretty old school, eh?

Personally I prefer the concept sketch posted earlier which looks a lot lighter and more modern-

Appears Honda is finding it difficult to strike a balance from looking at the futuristic Vultus (Revoltus) and the styling of this model, which pays too much homage to the original Africa Twin. Or are they taking the name just too literally???

I prefer the Ducati Hypermotard/strada styling of the concept sketch too. Light and striking.

At least the paint scheme of the Africa Twin will go down well in Thailand!

Just because you're paying homage to the old bike and using round headlights doesn't mean it has to look exactly like the 1986 bike.

Willing to bet it will look modern.

Cool article here:

[h=1]Has Honda Finally Aced The Adventure Bike?[/h]Next year, Honda will take the wraps off its new, large-capacity adventure motorcycle. Will it be any good? To find out, we talked top-secret details with a company insider.

"The first round of prototype bikes are built and the second iteration are being put together now," our insider tells us. "By the looks of it, it won't be released as a 2015 model."The bike he's speaking about is, of course, the heavily-rumored new Honda Africa Twin. Apparently, it wears that name "right on the side" and will be called that in the US market too, although it could also wear the CRF1000L moniker. That name gives away the capacity, that 1,000cc, liquid-cooled motor will be a parallel-twin, designed to provide good torque and a front wheel-biased weight distribution that's ideal for off-road performance. And this thing will go off-road. "It's aimed squarely at the KTM 990 Adventure," says our guy. "Rim sizes are 21-inch (front) and 17-inch (rear). Spoked wheels and no-****ing-around tires as stock."What our insider was unable to confirm was the rumored weight, said by German magazineMotorrad to be around 200kg or 440lbs (wet). If true, that will give the bike a huge unique selling point. Even mid-capacity ADV bikes now tip the scales north of 500lbs when carrying fuel and the big, 1,200cc touring-oriented ADV bikes can weigh much more; the 2014 Yamaha Super Tenere, for example, weighs 636lbs (wet, with its standard-fit boxes)!

Still waiting but edging closer...

A prototype revealed at the 2014 EICMA Motorcycle show

302502=22171-New-Honda-AfricaTwin.jpg

The rumors leading up to EICMA were that Honda would introduce an all-new Africa Twin adventure bike at the Milan Show. Unfortunately, those rumors were only partially true, as Honda revealed prototype it calls the True Adventure.

But make no mistake, the True Adventure is indeed the modern Africa Twin in spirit, if not in name. The prototype on display is caked in mud, barely covering its camo-pattern paint job, suggesting the True Adventure is actually off-road capable unlike the mainly road-going adventure-inspired models currently in vogue.

Honda says the True Adventure was influenced by its CRF450 Rally racer, though the engine is clearly a twin-cylinder powerplant instead of the 450′s single. It’s unclear, however, how big the engine is. Dakar rally rules restrict motorcycles to a maximum displacement of 450cc, but there’s nothing holding the True Adventure prototype to those regulations.

No further details were provided, which is a bit of a let down. We’ll have to wait a while longer for Honda to let us know if/when the True Adventure will head to production, and whether it will be called the Africa Twin.

Sounds like its going to happen after all which is great but still not confirmed what motor size. Journalist rumours seems as if Honda will use a 1000cc motor, which is too big IMHO. Would love to see 600 to 800cc please.

More earlier gossip & rumours from September 2014

Africa Twin Rumors
Follow the new Africa Twin rumours.....
The idea of Honda bringing the Africa Twin back to the market has generated an extraordinary amount of posts from motorcycle publications and on motorcycle boards.
The rumors have originated from info on
  • “leaked” specifications about this bike
  • a patent from Honda on a dual air cleaner system
  • Honda’s renewal of U.S. trademark of names of discontinued Honda motorcycles
  • an interview with Honda’s head of product planning in Europe
A set of drawings by journalists came out speculating what this motorcycle would look like. Honda recently announced a world premiere of an adventure motorcycle in Germany on September 10th.
We believe the Africa Twin name, with its following and tradition would require something larger than a reveal just a few days before Intermot. But the rumors continue so let’s entertain the possibilities.

Specs: Leaked info for the rumored 2015 (or 2016) Africa Twin
Published by a couple of motorcycle publications in Europe. The info is claimed to be from Honda insiders and supposedly relates to a new Honda Africa Twin:

200kg / 440lbs (fueled) // 180kg / 396lbs (dry)
20L / 5.3 gallon fuel capacity
Parallel twin engine, 1000cc
100hp
250mm / 9.8in suspension
21” front / 17” rear
Offroad-designed ABS brakes
Offroad-designed traction control

The main issue was that it was a parallel twin and no longer a V-twin like the original bike.
Many speculated the proposed 440lbs when fully fueled and ready to ride was not feasible to be achieved for a 1,000cc motorcycle with a 5 gallon tank, packing latest generation electronics and equipped with off road suspension.

Although there is no consensus of what an ideal dual-purpose motorcycle should look like, most everyone agrees lighter is better, and more power is better. Add to this recipe road worthiness/comfort/cargo capacity for long distance travel and we have the holy grail for a boundary expanding new enduro/adventure/dual purpose motorcycle. The specs on this rumored Africa Twin were spot on for most people, if they are feasible to be achieved, that is.

The Air-Cleaner Patent

302527=22170-HondaAT-AirBoxPatent.jpg

This is one of the most interesting part of the rumors – Honda’s patent for a new airbox system. It divides the aircleaner/airbox into two elements, one on each side of the bike, flanking the traditional tank/steering. It places the air cleaner where most motorcycles have the overhanging side of tanks. And it opens up space on top of the motor and under the seat (places where the airbox is traditionally located), allowing the heavy fuel to occupy the space in the center of the bike, just above the motor and under the seat. It helps in lowering the center of gravity of the motorcycle for one thing, and it facilitates air cleaner maintenance for another, an important item for off road vehicles. More on this further down this post.

The Interview with a Honda Executive
Exactly a year ago (at the 2013 EICMA meeting in November, Milan) we heard an interview of Moto.IT with Dave Hancock, Honda’s head of product planning and business development of Honda Motor Europe. When asked about the speculated Africa Twin, Mr. Hancock said:
We’ve heard everybody would like to see a new Africa Twin. The official line is we can’t make any comment about any models that we are bringing in the future. But you can probably see by the look on my face that we probably will be thinking about something maybe… I can’t tell you when. But I think you probably will be happy eventually.
This interview leaves no doubt about Honda bringing a new model, one that is based on what the Honda Africa Twin represented.

Trademark on Motorcycle Names
At some point last year Honda renewed (filed) the United States trademarks of names of Honda motorcycles that have been discontinued, among them Elsinore and Africa Twin. These could be routine trademark renewals, with no intention of doing anything about them on the near future. We and most others speculating about an adventure bike from Honda mostly focused on the Africa Twin name. It makes sense in our opinion that it will be called Africa Twin, since the Africa Twin name carries a much larger tradition and following outside of the United States. The name in itself could be the marketing campaign. But we would not be surprised if Honda brings something else to the market, and based on the Elsinore name.

The rumour mill is still ticking over'

This has been a long but steady road about the development of this bike. Somehow, Honda kept us informed along the way with just the right amount of information for us to picture in our minds what they were planning to do about this bike. A good and inexpensive marketing campaign so far.

The story continues on the Episode 4 video which was launched by Honda last week. On this episode, the video depicts a meeting with the True Adventure motorcycle project management, the bike’s engineers, the test riders, and again, there was Dave Hancock, Honda’s head of product planning.

The video shows the team gathered around a table to talk about the bike, a day after the test riders had taken it out for a test ride. Based on their conversation, the bike they are discussing in the video is clearly an evolution of the bike they rode in the Spring of 2014 (and likely the 2014 development bike is the one that was presented at EICMA).

The test riders discuss their impressions one year later, they describe a few characteristics of the motorcycle, talk about improvements from the previous version, and leave us wondering about what is going to be depicted in the next episode by showing clips of the bike in action as a teaser for the Part 2 of this meeting.
Dave Hancock states:

Yesterday we tested the adventure bike which is going to change the face of the adventure world forever.

....."the Dual Clutch Transmission. This type of transmission has existed in cars for many years already. And in the last few years Honda has introduced it to motorcycles (NC700 and NC750, and other models as well). Therefore DCTs are nothing new. What is new is an application of a DCT transmission on adventure motorcycles. If it does succeed, this motorcycle will really change the adventure world forever. Although we have already been exposed to something similar for adventure bikes – such as the Rekluse auto-clutch, the DCT offers a new window of opportunities, as it becomes an intrinsic system, core to the operation of the motorcycle.

The DCT is a very important element about this bike, but it is one of many innovations this motorcycle will bring to the adventure world. As we mentioned before, the list of patents submitted by Honda during the development of this bike is large, here we just covered the air cleaners solution Honda proposes with this bike. Dave Hancock may not be exaggerating when he says this bike will change the face of the adventure world forever.

Ready launching?
The latest time we expect to see this bike in production form is November 19-22 in Milan at the 2015 EICMA. We would not be surprised if this bike shows up before that event, though
.

More photos revealed about new Africa-Twin. Better photos have been revealed after Honda submitted them while applying for Australian patent. Been floating around for a few days now, but for those who haven't seen them yet, they show a fair bit of detail.
