There was a story in yesterday's Thai language papers about plans to build a 4 lane tourist route hugging the beach from Hua Hin all the way down to south of Chumporn and then cut across to Ranong. If it goes ahead it might make a nice alternative to Hwy4 but I fear it is going to go straight past my front door in Chumporn.

Possible; might have something to do with the port in Ranong, they already built a nice 4 lane from the port for quite a few kms, through the hills, musta ben expensive, took a long tome.

This was one of the great (ex) CEO's dream mega projects late last(?) year, as a solution to the traffic problems on R4 heading south.
I don’t think they ever got to the feasibility study stage - too costly environmentally & financially (but good for kick backs) so it was canned, or was that delayed until they've got more mates in position to fudge it through? You just never quite know in this lovely country. But they will probably ban motorbikes on it anyway.

Traffic problems on the R4? Which one might that be?
Every time I take H3 (Petkasem Highway) south to Chumpon or north to Hua Hin I wonder how it is possible that there is so little traffic, since it is the only highway connecting Bangkok with Malaysia, practically.
The nice new 4 lane goes from the port east and connects with the road between Ranong and Chumpon, direction Chumpon. South of Ranong the road is bearable, direction Khao Lak and Phuket; can't see the ocean the whole way down, if you're on a big bike I recommend to take the H3 south as far as possible; if you're heading to Phuket, go direction Pha Nga, some nice curvy roads in nice scenery, where you're better off with a SV650 than a 1000cc Triumph or Beemer.

Oooooops - how could that have happened, I NEVER make mistakes...
It's Highway 4 south, maybe the 'R4' confused me, maybe my recent trip to Cambodia is playing jokes with my memory...
