Tracks and Routes

Do any of the regular riders save their more interesting routes and tracks as files for sharing with others?

I realise that Davids map is a commercial proposition and have no wish to over-ride that, rather compliment it, but for singular tracks and routes to be available for others to download would seem to me to be a commmunity project that would be for the good of all.

Would not have to be restricted to GT area or even Thailand. I would certainly be more than happy to share mine from New Zealand which may benefit visiting riders. I know the 'back of beyond' and routes in Northland which whilst show generally on a Map, would not necessarily be the chosen route by visitors. Local knowledge and recent information is really helpful.

Has a 'track and route' library been considered? Does one already exist that I haven't found yet?

Although this idea has merit, many riders that I know are quite reluctant to post their tracks. Although we do share between close friends it seems that posting on the internet, as has been seen on this website many times, results in many more "takers" than contributors. :x

Fair enough and understood. Sadly the case with modern society.

I live my life in many areas by the concept of 'giving without hope of receiving.' That was where the question came about. Just my way.

Looking forward to sharing a few beers and stories

The only tracks I save over here are offroad riding tracks. Paved roads are outlined on maps and so I don't need tracks for those.

If you have any interest in any of my tracks from any of my ride reports send me an email.

Thanks for that, the offer is appreciated. Some of your trip reports have really caught my eye but as a first timer and someone likely to ride alone a lot of the time, some guidance as to offroad tracks, refueling stops, dangerous routes etc would be very helpful.

For my own part, I will be purchasing the regional Map for Garmin and will leave it there with someone when I am done so others visiting could make use of it until I come back again.Regards

Tony,

Depending on the timing of your visit, if I am locked into the shop, you can save yourself some $$$ by borrowing my 60CSx which already has the Thai maps installed - just leave your unit as security deposit or something.

If I am free however, we could do a daytrip together or with some of the other local riders.

Cheers,

Pikey.

Tonykiwi, I'll take you up on your offer of a swap.Im in Thailand now, and am doing a circuit of the whole country.I have loads of GHs and hotels logged in, mainly thanks to Beddhist, but Ive added some of my own.I am going to NZ, and although I lived there for many years and know most of the roads, it would still be handy to get some more detail in my satnav.Right, next thing is, how do we do a swap?

Hi,
Whilst I would love to help you with tracks and routes here, I am very new to the GPS world (two weeks to be exact) so unfortunately I don't have a ot to offer you apart from some local knowledge and recommendations right now. As things build up I will be more than happy to send you the files or just help by e-mail if that works better. Feel free to make contact through IM for my -mail address. At the very least I can shout you a beer or three nd a feed when you make it to Northland

On Silverhawks advice I went to the Open map Project in New Zealand. It really is a great option for travel here and is constantly being updated by users and mappers. Those using it tend to submit the changes and points of interest and the mappers will update for the next release, so a lot of it is built by travellers with travellers in mind.

Best wishes

T

Don't be, I thought the two threads I had contributed to on this subject made it pretty clear that I am new to GPS. That will not stop me from sharing my routes as I build them, and equally as importantly, taking time to share local knowledge with travellers.

This idea was only floated as a conceptual question, as always it is down to individuals whether they like the idea or do not.

OK, whatever you say. BTW, in the past if you purchased the ESRI map of Thailand here, which is the most popular, one had to submit the serial number of your GPS before purchase. The map was then encoded so that it only works on that unit. Someone who has purchased it more recently may be able to advise more on this.

The Thailand map available directly from Garmin in the U.S.A. is supplied on a SD card and cannot be copied, but the SD card can be used in different units.

Pikey has downloaded the Thai map from Rottweiller but that also had to be encoded I believe.

The Garmin SD card Thai map is available on warez sites.

I bought it on a SD card in Chang Mai earlier and got a warez copy from a friend that I keep in Mapsource on my PC so I can plan routes.

The Garmin SE Asia map on SD card is not available in New Zealand suppliers. I thought I would try Australia, but it seems to not be available there either.

Garmin US state it is only for the domestic market in US for some reason.

Amazon have it available but will not ship to New Zealand.

Why on earth would Garmin make is so bloody hard to buy one of their products, what is the reason for this.

Thanksfully I have friends in US who I am sure will allow me to ship to their address then forward but what a waste of time and energy.

Lightemup - I am curious as to the file format of the copy you have that is loaded into Mapsource. I have download 4 versions of the 2008 V8.0 map but mapsource will not import the .img file. They work great on my SD card
in my Garmin though...

This is taken from the readme file in one of the folder that I got on a memstick from a friend:
---------
Program makes following operation on map files in Garmin format:
- join several maps into single file.
- split map into files for Mapsource,
- split map into parts,
- insert new unlock code into single map file,
- display information about maps,

Tha main purpose of GmapTool is to join complete maps, like file gmapsupp.img prepared by Mapsource. GapTool is able to join several maps into one gmpasupp.img which can be loaded into GPS reciver.

Program can create files for Mapsource, it is file tdb and simple preview map in polish format. Map should be compiled with cgpsmapper. All files can be appended to Mapsource with MapSetToolKit. Map funcionality can be limited.

Program is not fully tested, please use with caution.
GmapTool do not check wether joined maps contains the same parts. Behaviour of joined maps containing repeted parts is undefined.
GmapTool can join parts of one map into full gmapsupp.img. In this case user have to supply Family ID and/or Product ID. When joining maps prepared by Mapsource, proper ID is already included in maps.

GmapTool recognise following input files: Garmin maps data *.img, *.trf, *.typ and ASCCI files with unlock codes *.unl.

Disclaimer:
Program was written basing on documentation avilable in internet and analysis of data produced by non-Garmin software. There is no guarantee that this program will create data compatible with Garmin GPS or software. Program in any way do not unlock locked map, user have to have valid unlock key to use locked map. User is responsible for all consequences of using this program.

usage:
gmaptool -j [-v] [-i] [-r] [-d] [-o output_file] [-u code]
[-f FID[,PID]] [-m map] [-b block] [-p prority] [-t|-n]
file.img...

gmaptool -S [-v] [-i] [-h] [-f FID[,PID]] [-m map] file.img

gmaptool -s [-v] [-i] [-h] file.img...

gmaptool -U code [-v] [-i] file.img

gmaptool -i [-v] file.img...

-j - join maps, -o required
-S - split maps for Mapsource
-s - split maps
-U - insert unlock code into file
-i - information
-v - verbose
-r - remove unlock codes
-d - create DEMO map
-o - output file name
-u - new unlock code
-f - Family ID and Product ID
-m - mapset name
-b - block size kB
-p - map priority
-t - transparent map
-n - non-transparent map
-h - short header img

Option -P switches program language to Polish.

-----------

To unlock the maps, there is a keygenerator that you just launch and get a workable key from.
My friend didnt need to unlock on his mapsource, I had to on mine for some reason.

Well,

It is with regret that I have to report myself as being a dismal failure in the GPS/techno-geek field of expertise.

Despite the sound help and guidance of a couple of our esteemed members from behind the scenes, I am yet to succeed in creating a mapset of the Thailand map so that I can start planning my Thailand routes on mapsource. I have bought an official SD card of version 8.10 (well as official as the seller on Ebay says it is) and it works just fine inside the Garmin.

I have used all the programs available to convert and adapt the relevant *.img files but can not produce a Mapsource file to allow me to work on my laptop with the map.

What little hair I have left is going grey and falling out now.

If anyone here is able to supply me with the working mapset that I can succesfully import into Mapsource I will donate a further $50 US to Give and Live.

T

Edit January 10th - Success at last, I now have the official Thailand map on my Garmin unit and also the same map imported into mapsource. What a learnig experience that was.

This all very interesting how do you save a route?

It would make it a lot easier to do trip reports if all you had to do was retrieve it from the GPS. It also numbers roads you won;t find lsted on maps. So it would be real handy for that.

I see that it gives actual travel time and down time as well average speeds ect.

The when your done how do delete them.

As far as sharing I will always post if I do something new.

Do you mean save a route you plan on your gps?
Or a track you already done?
On my garmin 60csx, a track goes onto the memory card everyday. So all I have to do is find the gpx file for the day, then send it where I want
23/12/09 would read 20091223.gpx
If I want to save part of the days track, I go to the Main Menu page, select tracks. The tracks page gives the option to save,so press this, then you can choose to save all or part of the track. You choose the beginning, abox comes up so you choose the time, then choose the end, etc, save, name it, and OK, you should then have a gpx file with the name you gave it on your memorycard
But you probably want to save a route.....
