When my group rode in Vietnam we had Thai, Malaysian, Australian and USA licenses. Customs at the border photocopied the documents and let us into the country. What I am trying to say, you should have no problems but having IDP just in case is good idea. You see, if you get involved in accident there is a possibility of insurance being void in case you don't have and IDP. If your Thai license is of 5 years validity you can apply for IDP.
