Random question... I need a "new" KLX 250 here in Malaysia. From Kawasaki's web page it seems the FI is the same on the 300 and the 250 and the stroke is the same.

We don't have the 300 in Malaysia... how difficult do you guys in Thailand think it would be to ride up on KLX250 and get the jug/piston swapped out with the 292cc from the 300?

Looks Like Kawi wants people to race this bike in local venues. Some type of Niche market. No lights means no sale for me.

But hey, Rock on to all you racers at there in Thailand getting your moto on!

As far as swapping out Cylinders and Pistons, and all the associated 4 stroke parts required, why bother ? Unless of course, you are one of those persons who like to pull up to a start line, and claim your in a 250 Class but are actually running a 300 engine between your legs?

Cheers

The reason to bother is the KLX 250 has an extremely long life. However, that can be a negative thing if you hate every moment of it. It also is "extremely improveable"... My 2008 went from +/- 17 RWHP stock (non-corrected with knobby) to 29 with the 351/pumper/pipe etc while still being extremely reliable.

Random safety reason: On Malaysia's freeway there is safety in being faster off the line and over all that a majority of cars/busses/trucks.
A stock KLX 250 would currently beat about 40% of cars off the line and 20% of the average cars top speeds.
My 351 beats about 90% off the line, and 40% of cars top speeds; it does beat the most dangerous vehicles on the roads at night - the busses which have a speed governor. (Police random road checks have shown over 80% of drivers are on speed. Most work insane hours with little sleep and the speed keeps the up but also makes them aggressive.)

My 2008 was the last year with car in Malaysia. Until recently, I don't think anyone had gotten the FI to work well with Bill's 351cc kit.

I have just tuned into this KLX300R, and for the off-road riding I do I think it would be almost perfect.

But Kawasaki has put the price up to 240,500 Baht.

Any one know when they jumped it by 40K?

I think its made in Thailand, and thats what's annoying me as the USA MSRP is 5499$!!!

CRF300 Rally is 172K
70K buy a lot of bling, and I do not believe the KLX is 70K more bike

Kawasaki has released a street legal KLX300, that looks exactly like the KLX250 1-2 months ago.
Couldnt find it on Kawasaki Thailands netside though. Which is strange as I thought the KLX range were assembled in Thailand. Anyone else know?

There are two models of the KLX 300.

The KLX300R is 128kg with adjustable suspension, 11.2" travel, 12.6" ground clearance at 240 000 baht..which is a ridiculous price as its for sale in the USA for $5499. Not road legal. Kawasaki CM have said the old price of 200 000 THB was before the new tax was applied.

And the KLX300 with is the model comparative to the CRF300L, 136KG. Road legal. Suspension 10" travel, 10.8" ground clearance.

Not sure on the Thai price or if its been released in Thailand for the dual sport but will be around 150 000 THB id guess.

Full Ohlins about 22K - at least it was last spring for my CRF
Buy the road legal one, have a pair of 17's for Super Motard
Save heaps

The standard KLX is certainly a decent option if you want a dual sport, I put the Öhlins on my CRF also and makes a huge improvement to the standard shocks.

The CRF/KLX 250's goes for around 80k bath these days. An 300 upgrade is about 12-14k bath, Ohlins about 22k bath.
Then you have an ok dirtbike for a low price.
The build quality of both bikes are solid, hence the weight. Milage is no issue. Mine has done 100k+ and the last 30k with the 308cc upgrade.

If it's true what "Real dirtbikers" says that 20% is the bike and 80% is the rider, then I know where I can improve.:):)

Unfortuately,

Both of the tried and true KLX and CRF are being built cheaper and crappier every year.

Both have front springs missing from a leg, and the diving is horrendous.....no adjustments at all on the forks.

Linkage on rears are having steel bushings and roller bearings replaced with nylon sleeves.

Clutch cables are wearing out within 1 year, even with monthly lubricating and adjusting.

The rear shocks,,,, don't get me started. Crap.

The frames are still full cradled and the engines are good.

Many external parts seem to rust within months after purchase..... Handel bars easily bend with one drop on the pavement.

Price point, price point and yeah, price point.

They seem to be competing to the edge of what's quality and the disposable consumer.

Tubes....IRC only. Want heavy duty Michelins or Max is? Not here. Wonder why we keep having to fill our 24psi tires every week? 555555

Not to even mention.... but I will: benzene 95 is slowly disappearing from gas stations.

GASAHOL AND ETHANOL HAS ALREADY BEEN PROVEN ALL AROUND THE WORLD to be the worst fuel for small 4 stroke engines.

Buyer Beware

Bought my CRF new in 2017
Still 100% bone stock, with exception of installing a Givi top box and luggage rack, crash bars, 2" bar lift, hand guards and Ohlins front and rear.
Absolutely no parts required - not even a light bulb
Run 17" CB500X wheels so tubes are a thing of the past
No rust.
Still looking for a donor CB300 for engine swap
Running gasahol on all my bikes, cars, chain saws, etc for over 20 years - no issues
HD sat in a steel shipping crate for almost 7 years, tank full of gasahol. Drain, refill, install new battery - ZOOM

Canthai.

You are a lucky man.

Every time I use gasahol fuel, {in my bikes), they don't want to start on first go, and idle like crap. Especially during winter time here in Thailand.

Maybe I should get rid of the KLX and buy a 2017 CRF? No Pizza Delivery Boxes though! 55555

I'm sure you had fuel stable or seafoam in that HD, so don't pull my chain! lol.

Cheers

I had StaBil - which according to them only last 6 months
All those horror stories you hear - complete BS in my experience.
When I worked seasonally, I left cars and bikes here from aprox April until November
Never a problem
Gasahol 95 every time
