What kind of oil are you using?

I guess the oil most mentioned was 10/40 - Honda recommends 10/30 for the 250 single.

I asked at the Honda dealer today and the mechanics showed me a white bottle with blue label and cap, says JASO MA 10W/30 on it.

They also use it for Waves and other transmission bikes. 138 baht a liter.

No API or "energy conserving" information, at least not in English! :)

Kawasaki dealerships sell Motul synthetic oil, it's around 500thb a litre. You can ride for at least double the distance on this stuff, than a cheap oil. The hot weather & hot engines quickly break down cheap non-synthetic oil here! I'm happy to leave this Motul synthetic oil in my engine for up to 2000km but the 130thb oil I don't like running it longer than 800km.

I agree with an earlier poster that cheap oil also contains friction modifiers that can cause wet clutches to slip under heavy use.

Only 2,000 km? Isn't that going a bit overboard?

I changed the cheap oil every 3,000 km and that's more often than recommended. The engine didn't burn any oil at 70,000 km.

Honda recommends the first change at 1,000 km; after that the cheap 130 baht oil should be good for 11,000 km and another 12K after that!

I always thought that synthetic contains friction modifiers, that's why some users complained about clutch slipping?

Dear Friends,

This post on motor oil change for big bikes such as BMW 1200, 96" HD and others:

-Where to source trustable motor oil in Thailand ?

-What to buy, can we source synthetic, or half synthetic oil in Thailand, what do you recommend, are prices reasonable ?

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Either a Shell 20/50 or PTT,
Does anyone have any recommendations / ideas.

Ok guys found this one

Straight motorcycle Engine Oil 20-50.
Let's see how it goes in the upcoming heat.

I use Motul 100% synthetic 10w - 40w @ 365baht per litre as I think the best for my bikes.
I would use any well know brand of mineral oil with a viscosity of 10W to 40W (Shell, Mobile).
I would not use 20w -50w oil as this is a bit thick, this weight oil is what I would use in tied, older, oil burning motors.

With the normal temps here in LOS I think 20w50 is not as thick anymore (not with temps like now in the "winter"). It seems even the Honda dealer in Australia is recommending to use at least 10w40 (instead of 10w30). In my Versys I did also use 20w50.

Makes a huge difference. In the heat the Versys gearbox is a hell of a lot better.
Highly recommended.

Interesting, I put this in my primary a while back. Seems to work well but to to early to give a solid opinion. Bikes been waiting on new rubber for some time now. I wouldn't put it in my engine (Harley, air cooled, lifters, ect...) but it's rated JASO MA2, imho it should be the ticket in the primary.
Fdale, that Rotella 20W-50 would be a great find!

I've been meaning to post this long ago; but, damn I get side tracked these days.
Years ago I was turned on to this oil by a good friend here. I've turned several friends on to it since & all have been very content with it. Mobil Delvac 1350 available within our borders here. It's a straight SAE 50 CF/SF that's sold in 18 liter jugs. I've seen individual liters once but can't remember where. I should note that Harley manuals state Diesel oils are a safe alternative, but IMHO I would use this over any HD oil. I usually run it about 8 months out of the year, changing to a 20w-50 in the cooler months. These are only my opinions though!!!! Just throwing another alternative out there. Here's a link to the spec sheet.

Found the Mobil 1 distributor for Chiang Mai.

For the hard core Mobil fanatics you can get it by the drum..

I'm not sure about retail sales from this outlet as the staff there at the time seemed somewhat incompetent & could not even produce a biz card or contact details.
The shop however is right next to Tire Tech, so you could swing by & check both places out.
Tire Tech is here

I've just changed my oil and went from Mobil 10 W 30 to PTT 20 W 50, 140 baht per liter. I've got a Yamaha Virago 1100 cc and the oil seems to be okay. I truly believe that the 10 W 30 is too thin, especially when you're riding longer distances.

Kind regards

There is evidence that using an engine oil with excessive viscocity modifiers is detrimental to overall engine life.
I never exceed 25 - i.e. 15W40 is 25, 10W30 is 20

The viscosity of the oil temporarily drops within the load zone and then rebounds to its normal viscosity after it leaves the load zone. This characteristic actually aids in the reduction of fuel consumption.

This is one negative.

Lubricant Additives - A Practical Guide

I use Full Syn 10W30
Change at 5000 km along with the filter in all my bikes

Interesting, how long would it take to damage your motor such that it needed repair?
Would us mere mortals riding in North Thailand ever notice?

Just something I found in doing research.
Practical value - I believe that a 10W30 Full Syn will do any and all lubricating duties required on any motorcycle anywhere in the world - leaving aside sub zero operation. In my 30 years in Northern Canada we use 0W30 Full Syn in temps which regularly hit minus 40 to 45 degrees. With 75W90 Arctic Gear oil in Trans and Diffs. Even once had a cold spell of minus 57C for 7 nights. At that temp nothing moved - starting the engines no problem, but leaf springs snap like glass from impact.

A bump for the guy asking about what oil to use.

I'm still very happy with the Shell Ultra 15-50 fully synthetic in my Vstrom.

Just to "clear up or confuse" the issue, some other GTR threads on oils.

GF-6A and GF-6B were introduced in May 2020
All about increasing fuel economy is passenger cars
Not backwards compatible - so Beware
Considering an 0W4 engine oil ... !!!
