Not so much as a trip report but a few notes and ramblings. I'll try and post again on this long overdue trip report thread ( keep the power on @DavidFL )

Watching the storms roll across Doi Ang Khan from the roof top of the resort (฿700pn). It's not a busy place, you'd hardly know it was here. Once I met a group of friendly policemen from Mae Hong Song staying here. As I was packing to depart they were brewing their special coffee on the back of their pick-up. We drank coffee, shot rice whiskey and departed.

I've stayed here a good few times when doing the Doi Ang Khan (Ban No Lae) - Wiang Haeng - Chiang Dao - Fang loop

This trip is to restock with cow peas*

A good place to decompress. Comfortable accommodation. Expensive beer, but a good starting point to reflect and feel the vibe before heading up the mountain for cow peas.

Cow peas*

Cow peas (Vigna unguiculata) are a notable legume crop in Myanmar, playing an important role in the country's agricultural and export landscape. Here's an overview:

Production & Growing Regions

Cow peas are typically grown as a post-rice crop or as an upland crop. The main producing regions include Magway, Yangon, Bago, and Mandalay. More recently, Yenangyaung Township has emerged as a growing area — over 1,000 acres have already been planted, with the township earmarking a total of 1,958 acres for garden pea and cow pea cultivation.
Historical yield data (1986–2017) shows a median of roughly 11.5 units per acre, with yields ranging from a low of 6 units per acre in 1991 to a peak of 16 units per acre in 2017.

Export Significance

In 2024, Myanmar exported 34,682 tons of cow peas, generating approximately US$23.1 million in export revenue at around $667 per ton. However, cow peas account for only about 1.27% of Myanmar's total pulse exports, making them a smaller player compared to black matpe (47.9%) and green mung beans (23.5%).

Genetic Diversity

Research on 68 cowpea accessions from Myanmar has revealed substantial genetic diversity, studied through seed storage polypeptides and cross-compatibility analysis. This diversity is valuable for both local food security and breeding programs aimed at improving resilience and yield.

Market Position

Myanmar cow peas are noted for their uniform grain quality and natural growing methods, with consistent demand both regionally and internationally. They're part of the broader "black-eyed beans" category in trade classifications.
