Members are able to post images inline within a Topic and a Reply. However;

  • There is a 250Kb size restriction to prevent uploading huge images directly from a camera
  • That is because large image sizes have a significant negative impact on server performance and page load times
There are two stages to reducing image sizes; resize to correct dimensions, and compression...

1.) Before uploading an image you need to first resize the image to a sensible size.
  • The maximum 800x600 pixels size is set as a compromise between big images and page load speeds
2.) Compress the image to minimise the file size - 50 - 60% compression reduces file sizes significantly without degrading quality.

There is an excellent online tool for this at: www.webresizer.com/resizer/ - if you are familiar with image management programs such as Picasa, or use Photoshop, both have tools for resizing and output for web use.

The following illustrations step through the Web Resizer process;

Step 1: Browse to the image you want, select it and Upload to Web Resizer;

Step 2: reset it from 4000 pixels wide to 730 width, and choose 60% Image Quality:

Step 3: Click the "Apply Changes" button and examine the results!

The outcome demonstrates the point about images sizes - this image dropped from 3 Megabytes down to 71.8 Kb

Adding Images to Topics & Replies
Step 1: Place the cursor where you wish the image to appear

Step 2: Click the Add Media button (don't use the "Insert" option in the menu)

Step 3: select the "Upload Files" option

Step 4: Click "Select Files" and browse to wherever you had saved the image/s you wish to upload to the Topic or Reply

Step 5: Make sure the "Attachment Display Settings" are None, None and Full Size as follows;

Step 6: Click the "Insert into Post" button

Your image should now appear in line, in the position you wanted it in your Topic or Reply post...

Repeat steps 1 -6 for subsequent images...

With the new Xenforo software you can upload images direct to GTR
The image size is limited to 250KB, so if it is any bigger you have to reduce the size first.
If the images are hosted on another site you only need insert the hyperkink to the image
