Alay border checkpoint to become international border

(KPL) Alay border checkpoint in Samuoy district of Saravane Province is now undergoing improvement to become an international border checkpoint by June this year.

Mr Bouaphengphet Phosay, Deputy Head of the Saravane Public Works and Transport Office briefed the progress of the improvements to Mr Bounkeut Sangsomsak, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, during his inspect tour to the province.

According to Mr Bouaphengphet Phosay, a number of old buildings have been renovated in order to prepare for upgrades, while the new building is also under construction and expected to be complete by the mid-June.

On this occasion, Mr Bounkeut urged all provincial and district leaders to focus on constructing infrastructure in the border gate area as per the plan. He also asked the provincial level to work hard on overseeing the project, while the district authorities must build their own plan to attract tourists in order to generate income for local people. The opening of the Alay International border will allow Saravane to exchange other countries and will give foreign tourists the chance to visit the beautiful landscape and fine culture of Saravane Province, especially in Samuoy district.

New Vietnam-Laos International Border Gates Launched

QUANG TRI, June 26 (Bernama) - Vietnam and Laos on Wednesday launched two newly upgraded international border gates linking Vientam's central province of Quang Tri and southern Salavan province in Lao, Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reports.

The La Lay (Quang Tri)-La Lay (Salavan) border gates are expected to boost cooperation and trade exchanges between the country's central provinces and Lao, Thai and Cambodian localities along the East-West Economic Corridor.

They are hoped to promote economic, cultural and tourism ties among boundary provinces of Vietnam and Laos, and contribute to improving socio-economic development and security-defence in border areas of both countries.

To date, eight international border gates, seven main gates and 16 auxiliary gates have been set up along the 2,000-km shared border between the two countries to meet demands of trade activities.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh said at the inauguration ceremony he believes the new border gates would open up new opportunities in trade, investment and tourism for localities in Vietnam, Laos, southeast Thailand and northeast Cambodia.

"We hope the gate would attract more investment to the region and boost Asean connectivity towards the establishment of an Asean Community by 2015," he said.

Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Thonglun Sisulith said the 834 markers planted along the shared border reflect the wish of both countries to build a border of peace, friendship and prosperity.

He expressed belief that the La Lay border gates would help raise two-way trade, ease travel and tourism activities and expand connectivity between Quang Tri and Salavan provinces and the region as a whole.
