Pakxe to Savannakhet With a Stone House, a monkey, and riverside track.

The way…. Ride up highway 13 from Pakxe, turning off towards the river about 50 kilometres before Savannakhet. Then follow the Mekong to Savannakhet after checking out the Stone House.


The Stone house is the right on the river bank where the track begins to head north.

It was a great time of the year to be riding in Laos,..a little damp at times, but it was worth getting wet now and then to see the farmers sowing the rice fields, and the surrounding vegetation so lush and green.

Time to leave highway 13, and point the KLX towards the Mekong on the dirt.

I arrived at the Stone House where this sign gave me the run down on its history. The sign says that the work on the Stone House started in 557AD. Just looking at the design Id say it was more like 561AD..perhaps July.

I walked around to the side of the building where the front entrance was located.

I walked up the stairs and entered the Stone House and was surprised to see a monkey inside with many Buddhist and Hindu relics. Yes that is a real monkey.

See…it moved.

This guy seemed to be the caretaker of the house. I took he’s photo because he looks so much like PabloPicasso

I have to admit I really don’t like monkeys. I find there behaviour to be rude and offensive at best, and there manners are appalling at times. Never the less, I was in his place of residence, so I was respectful and polite to the primate.

The Stone House is certainly worth checking out.

Time to get back on the bike and follow the river to Savannakhet.

There’s some nice little towns along the way.

I got to say this was a very enjoyable ride.

There were plenty of this classic bridges along the way.

Everyone has to chip in when the time comes to planting the rice, and these little girls were doing a great job. A little different to Australia where you see 10 year old girls and boys….yes boys, sitting in beauty salons getting there nails done at the fifty dollars a shot.

This bridge wont be here much longer. There must have been six or more new bridges getting built towards Savannakhet.

A happy farmer, ..plenty of rain for his rice, lets hope it’s a bumper season for these hard working people.

That Stone House is something new for me & on my hit list for the south next trip.
Laos always has something new to check out - a great country for motorcycle touring.
