UPDATED INFO
Saturday 6th November 2021 - 13th Annual GTR MHS Memorial ride

We would like to remind everyone coming that due to the MHS Covid-19 health restrictions

Limit 50 riders. More than 50 participants, approval is required in advance from the governor & health department.

No official ride. Make your own way to Mae Hong Son.
Meet at the PTT in Mae Hong Son by 3pm, ready to proceed to the temple & the one ceremony at the Chedi.

Participants coming from any designated Dark Red red one, need a double vax with certificate or covid free certificate.

1 simple ceremony at the Chedi.
Wear a mask when in public!!

Piya GH
No party scene at the Piya. Social distancing to be observed.
No alcohol served.
No buffet dinner, get your own food from outside.
No music.
To summarize = no official event at Piya.

With these limitations, not everyone can gather in at Piya at once, but we expect some people to gather by the lake, or in the night market or in their own small groups.
The situation is quite fluid & something will work out on the night.
It will be different & a night to remember.

The Chedi Ceremony
For those who do come to MHS we expect everyone to front up at the GTR Chedi & temple for the ceremony to pay your respects.

A small donation will be requested to cover costs of the temple ceremonies.

PTT Rendezvous
Please park outside in the street, not in the PTT as we over crowded the PTT last year & the management was not happy.
Be ready to depart from the PTT at 3PM to the temple.

T-Shirt
A T-shirt for the ride will be available after the event.
The shop is still working on the design.

Thanks everyone for your understanding.

The GTR Chedi in Mae Hong Son
Google Maps

The first ride started in 2009

Some history
What started out 13 years ago as a fun ride in memory of two good riding mates has now developed into a respected memorial ride with a soul that culminates in a moving ceremony at the GTR Chedi atop Wat Doi Kong Mu in Mae Hong Son.

The first ride started here
The Tj John Hamilton - Simon Siinthai Grant Memorial Ride

The first ride was for TJ Tropical John Hamilton and Simon Grant, two best mates from Phuket, who came to North Thailand regularly, for motorbike rides and befriended the GTR Community in Chiang Mai, such that we were all good buddies.

John TJ Hamilton, 7 April 1951 - 10 November 2008. TJ was the most loveable, happy character you could imagine. The best mate of Simon Grant, TJ sucumbed to cancer in 2008 after a short 6 month illness.
One year after TJ died, Simon proposed a ride to MHS in memory of TJ & to have a few beers to remember the good times we all had together. A date was agreed for the ride, then 2 weeks beforehand Simon was killed in a hit and run accident in Phuket. We were all stunned.
Simon Duncan Grant, 3 May 1964 - 22 Oct 2009.
We swore then, never to forget TJ or Simon & to always honour them with an annual ride to MHS, and so the GTR MHS Memorial Ride began.

At the start however there was no Chedi, and we started with plaques & 100-year old rose bushes planted at Wat Chong Klang by the lake in Mae Hong Son.

The original Ride then, was called The TJ John Hamilton - Simon Siinthai Grant Mae Hong Son Memorial Ride

Many thanks for your interest. We would love to see you again.
We wont set anything up until much closer to the date, as it is too difficult right now to plan that far ahead.
We really don't know exactly what we can can / cannot do with a big group yet.
Please stay tuned - watch this space.

Indeed for individual travellers & small groups less than 10 or 20 would not appear to be an issue; however plan on taking 40-70 riders may not go down well with the local health officials at the moment.
We wont know until a month out from the event, what the guidelines are, because you cannot plan more than 10 days ahead at the moment.

Hi Markus
Thanks for your interest.
We don't have a confirmed plan yet because of covid, however we are having discussions in MHS in the next few days to see what we can and cannot do. 3 days ago MHS said they don't know yet!
We are optimistic because the situation is rapidly changing & improving, but it could be that there is a limit on numbers.
We certainly hope not, but at this stage we don't know. Please stay tuned and will make an announcement once we know & can firm up a plan.

Update Revised Plan

The 2021 13th Annual GTR MHS Memorial ride.

The confirmed date: Saturday 6 November 2021.

As to be expected there are complications organizing a full-on normal GTR MHS Memorial Ride, but we note that there is considerable interest from many riders still for the ride & event, and we thank everyone who has contacted us to express their desire for the event.

We too want to hold the ride – it is a tradition & intend to continue “as normal” although with some limitations.

After discussions with the MHS Public Health department & the abbot of Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mou, we can advise that we have approval for a scaled down event.

So for 2021 the current situation is
  • Limit 50 riders. More than 50 participants, approval is required in advance from the governor & health department.
  • No official ride, but meet at the PTT in Mae Hong Son by 3pm, ready to proceed to the temple & the one ceremony at the Chedi. Make your own way to MHS!
  • Participants coming from any designated Dark Red red one, need a double vax with certificate or covid free certificate.
  • 1 simple ceremony at the Chedi.
  • Wear a mask when in public!!
  • No party scene at the Piya. Social distancing to be observed. No alcohol served. No buffet dinner, get your own food from outside. No music. To summarize = no official event at Piya.
  • A small donation will be requested to cover costs of the temple ceremonies.
We need to know asap who intends to come. If there are more than 50 people we need to apply for approval before the event!

I'd like to join, too, incl. stay at Piya guest house. Will bring a valid "covid free certificate" (aka PCR test, I guess) from BKK.
