On the recent 2013 GTR Mekong Boat Trip everyone got 1 weeks 3rd party insurance on the way in via the agent we used in Chiang Khong.
1 week was not enough for me & as Im a regular to Laos I thought it easier to bite the bullet & take out maximum 3rd party insurance for a year to save time & hassles each time you go on.

So for the record it costs 1,850 baht / 482,945 kip for 12 months.

and the pay outs are as below

How well it works I've yet to test (& dont want to) but for me it saves a lot of time, provides more peace of mind knowing that you've got the maximum coverage & over 12 months it is not a lot of money.

Check it out with AGL.

I'm with Toko Assurance and have 1st Class cover which pays for damage to my own bike as well, the price for that was just over one million Kip.

I think that the insurance is quite good here in all honesty, my wife's friend keeps damaging her car, I.e. reversing in to bollards etc... And has had no problem so far and has claimed around 3 times in the last year!!!

In VTN I paid 1100 bath for one year for the CRF250 with AIG.
The office at the Nan border is usually closed for some reason.

For nan border you need to go in to town.
They don't sell insurance in the shacks any more.
When I crossed. The place in town was closed and didn't end up getting insurance until houe Xai

Do you have an approx location in town? I couldn't spot one last time, and bought it at Hongsa the first time, when I stopped there on another trip, they didn't sell me one anymore.
For the few who are able to cross the Phudu-crossing, there's a Lao-Viet branch where they have the few shophouses, just before leaving.

HI there,

Finally manage enough time to drive from Singapore to beautiful Laos come Dec 2026 and I was wondering if it is possible to purchase vehicle insurance for Laos (1week min to 1mth max) at Thailand side near Chiang Khong before I cross to Houayxay?

Any advise is welcome.

It has been a long time my last drive in 2017, and it seemed alot have changed, not for the better IMHO, but change is inevitable I guess. Missed the nautral scenery in northern Laos.

Not as far as I know.
However there is a Lao insurance office at the bridge on the Lao side.

Just crossed into Lao via 4th Friendship Bridge on 20 Feb.

Bought 30 day 3rd party Laos insurance for CAR. THB 500.

Went to shop suggest by David but it was closed.
So as I drove along the "Main street" that runs parallel to the river (one way street), I saw a sign for Allianz Insurance and bought. Shop is actually a guest house / Insurance broker.
As you head down street, its on your right, near Riverside Huayxay Hotel.

This is the place David recommended but both my friend and myself found it closed.

EXTRA ADVICE:
1. I am Singaporean and I drove in my Malaysian Hilux. My Malaysian driving buddy drove in his Malaysian Hilux.
I previously wrote into Lao Embassy SIN to request for a letter. They replied to inform them 2 weeks before entry and they will generate a letter to facilitate entry. I had assumed the letter could be emailed.
I entered Thailand for the maximum 60 days. During that period, I emailed Lao Embassy SIN with the entry date (coincided with last of the 60 Thai entry date). Lao Embassy SIN said that I had to collect the letter personally, no email, no authorised collectors, no courier.
So no choice but to enter Lao without a letter.

I mentally prepared for a "interview " on the Lao side of the 4th Friendship Bridge.

True enough, after doing immigration and vehicle entry documentation (all with receipts), I was asked to go upstairs for a interview.

Cutting story short, as I had no "letter of invitation", I was at their mercy. Settled my "mistake" for THB 2k, with a police warning report. Initial offer was 3k

My Malaysian buddy, who entered a 2 weeks later, had a more exact entry date for Lao. He applied and got his letter.
Upon crossing, same interview but despite his letter, he was also asked to contribute to their "retirement fund". He firmly stood his ground and did not budge. Reluctantly, "they" let him go without him having to pay a cent.

Moral of above story, goto Lao Embassy SIN to get the all important letter. Entry date can be a bit flexible by a few days.

2. Lao roads are as terrible as everyone tells you. As we were otw to China via Boten. I drove to Boten, parked Hilux there for 2 weeks and took train south to Vientiane, Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang before returning to Boten for meetup with buddy, for entry into Mohan.

3. Too much stuff to type out but if need further advice, WA me at 9768-1267.
