Not quite a tip, but 3 days ago got "stung" at the Phousi 1 Guesthouse in Luang Prabang.
Our original rooms bookings were US$20 a night, down from US$25 a night because we were not interested in the breakfast.
What a surprise then when checking out after 5 days, that the room rate was suddenly US$30 a night.
After complaining, they explained we could have the room for US$25 as indeed we had not had any breakfasts, and that the reason for the higher tariff was that we had been given the wrong room & had stayed in a more expensive room - so had to pay more.
Not impressed at all!
We reluctantly paid up, but in Luang Prabang make sure you avoid the Phousi 1 guesthouse, or if you do stay there - pay in advance when you check in, so that there are no touch ups & scamming.

Yep the Oudom Souk is still a winner for me in LPQ.
Jurgen too just stayed there for a few nights. I was there again for 4 nights for the boat racing last month.
I think the price is now 100,000 kip a night too.

I stayed at Oudomsouk, as always, during my sojourn in Luang Prabang this December. I am quite amazed about the theft reports in Tripadvisor and can only say that I never experienced something bad in this guesthouse (my biggest theft, including camera, computer and other valuables, lately, was only in a Swiss train).

Some common sense about watching valuables in a hotel room (any hotel … I had once the whole safe stolen in a 5 star Manila hotel), has to be used. Oudomsouk has a small safe for valuables in the rooms and people should remember what they put in and out of it.

And, finally, I am very cautious about Tripadvisor reports and tend to rely far more on GT-Rider experiences.

I could swear that there was yesterday a reply to this post but it looks like it has disappeared. Also from "TripAdvisor" this tidbit about the Oudomsouk: It seems as if the owners have added security measures since some of the past reviews. There are now cameras all over the property and safety boxes in the room. I stayed here a while back when these things weren't there. It's a decent little guesthouse, great location right in the center of Luang Prabang.

Lovely place..
Also a good place next doors on the right if standing in the front looking straight in to the guest house..

Only problem I ever had with the safe.. was remembering my code. LOL

Cheers

Well two GTR favourites the Oudom Souk & the Kok Jing seem to be really popular nowadays.
Most of the Kok Jieng rooms are now rented out by the month to the road construction crew working on the Hongsa - Chomphet/ Luang Prabang road.
The Oudomsouk now has a parking problem getting in & out with your big bike because their parking space is cluttered with scooters of the staff & customers. BTW rooms # 11 & 5 are the go at the Oudomsouk because they are double the size of the other rooms & room # 5 upstairs is whisper quiet if you want an unplanned sleep in. I only stay at the Oudomsouk if I can get either room 11 or 5!

However it's time for a new convenient joint to hang out in LPQ.

The main problems with a big bike in Luang Prabang is parking, getting a decent sized room so you're not tripping over your gear & getting in & out of the room; plus getting a fair deal.

Depending on the season room prices are US$20-60.
Upstairs is more expensive than the downstairs rooms; & if you are lucky the ground floor room at the back has a nice courtyard.

I'm nicely impressed for US$20 a night.
Its got ample parking.
It's quiet without the masses.

Highly recommended!

6 years away from Luang Prabang and the town still has charm, but its gotten a lot more hectic plus prices have gone up.
The Oudomsouk has been taken over by Viets who run the Pu Malin group of hotels in soi Joma.
The price is 1000 baht a night, no parking = not on my recommended list anymore.
Late in the day, hot & weary I surrendered, & took a room opposite the OUdomsouk at the Phonemaly, but was not impressed with the room or parking in amongst a sea of bicycles. The price 450,000 kip = 725 baht.
The Beuy Kokjiang has also been taken over & is no longer a guesthouse. So another blank.
I got a tip off for a brand new place that was only 250,000 kip = 400 baht, bit it was a bit out of the way, down a bumpy dirt track & the only reception on duty was a pack of barking dogs = no need to get off your bike. Pass.

With a bit of exploration I've found the best little soi, with multiple small guesthouses with off street parking.
And the absolute winner this trip is the Boonchaleurn Gh.

A small 7-room cosy family place, with lovely under cover parking.

Lots of out outdoors seating in the shade.

There are 3 rooms on the ground floor & 4 upstairs.

Get a downstairs one & walk straight into your room 10 metres away.

Impressive in the room were the multiple hooks for hanging up your riding gear & clothes.
Some places have none, or no coat hangers. The Boonchaleurn is a winner all round.

Even the bathroom was nice & proper.
1710320933668.jpeg

The asking price was 400,000 kip = 650 baht. I paid for 3 nights minimum up front and got it for 350,000 kip = 560 baht a night.
3000,000 kip maybe possible if you stay longer and pay up front.

Highly recommended

The Bonchaleurn soi has multiple guesthouses, with various types of parking. Check out these

Cheers the soi Boonchaleurn has some very nice budget options for bikers, who prefer not to be paying fancy hotels where you dont really use their facilities or service.

Last time in LPQ, Chris recommended the Manichan GH. Price around 700 bath in the low season. Very popular, so book early.
Good parking and restaurant in the back.
