The forest park is a great ride. My two cents worth this is a little town with a heart of gold. Issan at it’s best

Roi Et
Once a prosperous and extensive community but ravaged by floods, Roi Et has made a come-back as a town of great promise, with its huge Thung Kula Rong Hai (flat-land) being developed into a fertile and productive land. Roi Et is 512 kilometers from Bangkok.
Have your questions about this province answered quickly in our All About Thailand Forums. Post questions about your next holiday as well as culture and language of Thailand.
Book your hotel in Roi-Et before you leave home and save money!

Pha Nam Yoi Forest Park

is located in the northeast of Amphoe Nong Phok, 65 kilometers from Roi Et. Pha Nam Yoi is a large stone cliff having running water and small springs coming out from the cliff all year round. On the hill is a monastery with a large multipurpose and big pagoda of 101 meters in height.

Ku Ka Sing

a large Khmer architecture dating between 1017 -1087 A.D., is located in Amphoe Kaset Wisai. Travel 60 kilometers along Roi Et-Surin Road until arriving Ku Phra Kona and turn right into the road leading to Ku Ka Sing,18 kilometers away. The remains consist of 3 prangs located on the same sand stone basement and rectangular buildings called Bannalai situated at two sides in front. All buildings are surrounded by the wall.

Thung Kula Rong Hai

is a huge flat-land covering four provinces, Surin, Roi Et, Maha - Saraham and Buriram, with an area of about one million acres. The name literally means the Weeping Field of the Kula (a tough nomad people). For it was scorching dry in the summer and totally inundated during the rainy season, with no natural water sources or tall trees to provide shade. However, it has been partially developed developed for agricultural purpose through a land reform project to turn it into a vast productive farming area.

Roi Et Reservoir

about three kilometers from the town center, is another area popular with the people. For it provides both beautiful scenery and restful atmosphere for relaxation.

Wat Klang Ming Muang

is also located in the provincial town. Its monastic hall is more than 200 years old and houses mural paintings depicting the Life of the Lord Buddha. In the reign of King Rama V, the Swearing-In Ceremony was held at this temple.

Wat Buraphaphiram

is situated in the provincial town. The country's highest standing Buddha image, reaching 67.85 meters in height is enshrined in this temple.

Bung Phlan Chai

a lake in the town center which has been deepened to make a beautiful spot for the town people. It is also where the Roi Et town Pillar is located.

Cheddi Chai Muang Kai:

I really can’t do justice to this we have 100’s of photos from our first visit it’s work in progress, supported by the local entrance fee when were there was 0 free. I didn’t understand the difference between a Cheddie and a Wat, based on what I saw here this is a fortress designed to protect the province high on a hill with a view of the entire valley. Double defensive wall surrounding it.

Thanks Capt.

"It's between Roiet and Sakhon Nakhorn. Fantastic MC run. Good road with a few twisty bits but nicely banked. Phu Phan Ratchanavet is the name of the palace. Visitors are only allowed when the Royal Family is not in residence and even then you need permission from the Bureau of the Royal Household. Not worth the hassle but no big deal as the palace is locted in the middle of Phu Phan National Forest and well worth the 2 hour ride from Roiet."

You know any place to stay overnihgt near the National forrest?

I want to ovenihgt near there on Sunday nigh. I act like I'm retired these days and take things easy

Ray,

The palace is close to Sakhon Nakhon (about 16 km south west of the city center along Rd 213) and I found 10-15 hotels within a radius of about 20 km. from the palace (used the ESRI GPS map of Thailand in Garmin Mapsource). Have no idea about quality/price of the hotels though though.

Been looking for a chance to meet up with a few of you, and hope to do so at Roi Et.
Only an overlander, but looking for that 'personal' experience.
Coming in from Laos...
See you there I hope...

We have just made the tentative decision to hit Roi Et for the bike week, too. Look forward to seeing our old GT Rider buddies and making new friends. Never been to Roi Et yet, looks like a quaint town in pretty surroundings. We'll book Phetcharat Garden for Saturday night because it's so close to the bike week.
Phu Phan National Forest sounds like a tempting idea, but it's too far out of our way back to the Big Mango... :(
Does anyone plan to ride in the opposite direction on Sunday, i.e. south/southwest perhaps, so we can spend Sunday night someplace roughly along our way home?
Who can recommend nice MC roads?

Ray, can you suggest a nice tour we could do on Sunday? As I said, we prefer to explore interesting places somewhere roughly along our way back home.

I intententially directed you around so that yuo would see something different, there are faster routes for sure.

Caution I have ridden 304 before really beautiful goes up through the mountains, but lots of slow moving trucks and buses One lane each way.

Beat you say yuo haven't ridden Issan before, watch out on these roads, sugar cane trucks can be a real problem. They look like country roads to me, which means they are not use to traffic and will pull tractors onto the roads without looking. Matter of fact just assume no one is looking cause they probably are not.

The road can be in good condition and then for a period of time be potholed, from district to district. It's all in who got the money in the last budget.

I used the thinknet map to see the overall of this and then goggle maps to d to do the ride plan. So I recommend yuo take a good look at you map and make sure I didn't mess up somewhere along the lin.

Go to

http://maps.google.com/

Click get directions, entre the towns as I did and yuo wuill see a map on the right it will show the oute from city to city. There are a lot more direct routes, but they are pretty boring. Come on someone must know beter then I do I never ridden it all. Heck Marco that almost stomping grounds

Hi Ray
I will be coming down with 7 or 8 of the local guys from the Sakon Nakhon Big Bike Club. Leaving at 1300 on Saturday 4th, should be a quick ride down as they are on BMWs and Harley, hopefully not doing the usual Thai thing of stopping every 50KM. Don't know what they will do if it is raining. See you there.
Regards
Jim
