Some kids along route 18

Hauke's bike getting carried across.. His exhaust was too low and the river was quite deep.. Even the KLX exhaust was close to the water.

Route 18 – Kingfisher's branchout – two dirt landings, no harm, just red earth!

Here’s two of my favourites.

The first is what looks to be an innocent mud puddle in the middle of the track, problem was, there was a branch just under the mud on an angle, ready and waiting to catch out unsuspecting riders.

555 That Video is hilarious, but they always are when its someone else lying in the mud.

The muddy hand that appears is like something out of a 1930s horror movie.....ITS ALIVE!

Strictly speaking.. Not a picture.. :)

But a great demonstration of how much fun Route 18 A is and can be..
As well as especially muddy just after the rainy season.. This was November.
Would not suggest trying any earlier.

Still one of the best rides in Laos IMHO

For those that have ridden 18 A. You will remember the big river crossing you hit after leaving 13 S... or last big river crossing before reaching 13 S if coming from Attapue.

Well.. it use to be a real dog leg, nightmare to navigate with big holes to drown in if you took the wrong line.

All those big holes have been filled in with stones.. you can drive / ride over really easily now.

Will grab a still shot from the video of the stones..
If you want to see how it was before.. Check out the video link in the post above.. Where Justin nearly goes for a swim.

Here is Chris Corbett from Moto Lao riding over.

We rode the upper 18 A track.. Pretty easy with a few creek crossings and one deep ford.. but there are kids with a little boat to get you through..

Next time will take the original 18 A as there are plenty of little tracks leading to the upper track if the path is blocked.

Cheers

Rode from Attapeu to Ubon this early December. The river crossings where very challenging for me ,also I dint had a clue on how many rivers I needed to cross.Riding this route alone isn't probably the best, but It was great fun and for sure a nice adventure. The road itself was dry and not difficult.

Well done. Nice photos.
Any idea how much asphalt was on the road at the Attapeu end?

As soon as you leave Attapeu the asphalt ends. No real river crossing beween Attapeu and Sanamxai. It is becoming a bit more interesting after Sanamxai. Also a few K's out of Sanamxai there is road to the right that should lead to some waterfalls .there is sign with some pictures. Asked a local guy and he told me that the falls are about 10 Km from that T- junction of the 18 A , but since I din't know what was still laying ahead of me on the 18 A I didn't take the side road to the falls but continued on the 18 A.
Now I know that if I go a next time ,I'll have enough time to visit the waterfalls.
I left Dok champha hotel in Attapeu 7: 30 Am. and reached Chong Mek border around 13:30
