Great to see another Memorial Ride being organised for my 2 closest Phuket mates. I will probably not get to ride this one as I have just moved back to Oz ( Qld ) to live. Unfortunately the day before I left Thailand another mate had a fatal accident while riding his Harley. I would have been on the ride with him and the others but had just sold my bike.
Hope you all have a great time .......Take care guys.

Bump reminder for 2012 Memorial Ride.
Saturday 10th November 2012.
End up in Mae Hong Son for the 2nd MHS International Music Night.
Lots of good music & fun in MHS that night with the Aussie John Experience Band from Chiang Mai.
All riders welcome. Please note that this year's route may vary due to the local Mae Chaem road conditions & expected heavy traffic on R1263 fort the Mae U-Khor Sunflower festival opening. Route details to be confirmed later, but depart from the Kafe at 9AM this year.

SATURDAY 10TH NOVEMBER
A master plan outline
Depart 9AM from the Kafe
Take the long way R108 to Mae Hong Son.

No Doi Inthanon / Mae Chaem / R1263 this year. Why? Because of the crappy road conditions around Mae Chaem, plus the official opening of the Sunflower festival on R1263 east of Khun Yuam. There should be heavy traffic in R1263, which is a narrow road & in the late afternoon you will be riding into the sun heading towards Khun Yuam. Coupled with expected heavy traffic - convoys of mini buses, some with police escort - it is better to avoid this road on the day. R108 Chiang Mai - Mae Sarieng - Khun Yuam - Mae Hong Son is a much safe road.

Ride south from Cnx on R108 for 3.5 kms, just after the airport turn right at the traffic lights & go to the canal road.
Turn left & follow the canal road south to Sanpathong.
In Sanpathong turn right back onto R108.

Stay on R108 for the rest of the way to Mae Hong Son.

Stop & regroup in Hot at the PTT, on the right hand side just after town.
From Hot next stop for a group photo & coffee break at Baw forestry centre.

Next stop Mae Sarieng group photo at the Mae Sarieng town turn off by the information centre.
Go into town for lunch.
Lunch at the Inthira Restaurant.
Lunch time should be close to mid day.
Drop an hour for lunch.

After lunch ride non-stop to Khun Yuam.
in Khun Yuam regroup & take a pit stop at the PTT, right hand side, on the south side of town.

From Khun Yuam ride onto MHS.

ETA MHS 4.30PM at a guess.
Group photo at Wat Chong Klang by TJ & Simon's plaques + the newly planted Dan White.
Hang out by the lake & enjoy the music night.

SUNDAY
Breakfast at leisure.
Depart MHS 11AM?
Ride non-stop to the Pang Mapha look out. Take group photo.
Coffee stop in Soppong at the Soppong River Inn or the Rock Coffee.
Lunch in Pai at Pai Country.
Pai - Chiang Mai ride non-stop to the X-Centre.

ROUGH KMS
Hot - Mae Sarieng = 103 kms.
Mae Sarieng - Khun Yuam = 88.5 kms
Khun Yuam - Mae Hong Son = 69 kms
Mae Hong Son - Soppong =
Soppong - Pai = 64 kms
Pai - Chiang Mai = 130 kms

Please note DEPART from the Kafe at 9AM.
That means if you want brekky & a cuppa you should get it well before.
The Euro Diner opens early for breakfast, as does the Bier Stube. Recommend use either of these two places for breakfast. The breakfast at Bier Stube is the quickest, but Euro Diner is much closer to the Kafe.
Have a cuppa at the Kafe if you like, but breakfast service there so early is S-L-O-W.
Arrive at the Kafe with a full tank of fuel ready to go.
First optional fuel stop is Hot just on 100 kms out taking the canal road to Sanpathong.
Chiang Mai - Mae Sarieng = approx 190 kms.

Dear all,

Anyone know of groups riding up from Bangkok or anywhere where a planned route might meet me riding up from Bkk? Trying to leave on Friday and get to Nakhon Sawan and save myself a couple of hours on Saturday, but might have to battle the whole way up from dawn to dusk...

My planned route is to turn off at Thoen and cut through to Hot and around the R108. I can hook up with other riders anywhere along the way...

Thanks.

A group of about 7 bikes including Tony BKK left Bangkok Friday am and will overnight in Mae Sot. A couple of groups are leaving Chiang Mae Saturday am and expect to lunch in Mae Sariang around midday. Probably at Inthira restaurant. Maybe you can meet up with one of these groups for the final leg to MHS

The 2012 Ride.....the tradition continues to honour departed GT Riders

284383=13392-img_4067_0.jpg

the start from the Kafe
10 riders: Capatin Wally, Gary D, Oliver, BrianBkk, Bungy, Kiwi John, Dave Carrell, Hoghead & Alex.
& we got away almost on time at 9.10am.

It was a busy run all the way down to Hot with considerable traffic - high season is starting?
The Chomthong - Hot road construction was hardly a problem & they are making fast progress on the 4-lane.
It was pit stop & drink time at the PTT in Hot & it was a relatively lengthy one chatting away, & topping up with liquids in the warm day. Probably if we had not chatted so much we might not have gotten sop hot & needed so many rinks. More than one rider went back into the 7-11 for seconds.
Just as we were about to leave JG's North Comets group arrived & there was more chit chat. Good to see so many friendly riders on the road.
Eventually we were on the road for a quick blast into the twisties beside the Mae Chaem river then up into the mountains.
Stop # 2 was at the road side coffee sala at Baw Kaew. Perhaps a bit close for most of us, me included, who missed the designated stop, requiring a U-turn much to some people's amusement & / or bewilderment; but it a delightful stop amongst the pine trees 1,000 metres up.

It was time to get the banner out again & give both TJ & Simon a look at the view..

284383=13393-img_4071.jpg

From the pine trees it was straight onto Mae Sarieng for lunch.
As we cruised into MS - loh & behold there were a group of riders just arriving from the south - TonyBKk & co. What brilliant luck & timing.

284383=13394-msarieng.jpg

this made it all much easier.
Cruise into town for lunch, where JGs North Comets group joined in at the same restaurant, then the Thai guys from Piston Shop got into Mae Sarieng too.

After lunch & a quick fuel top up it was on the road for MHS. True to form the pace quickened up after here & only the crap 15? odd kms of potholed asphalt / dirt slowed riders down.
The next photo stop was the Pha Bong dam viewpoint, & something new for the Bkk riders to my surprise.

284383=13395-img_4076_0.jpg

Arrival time in MHS was 4.30PM, & just right for a photo op outside Wat Chong Klang

284383=13396-img_4087_0.jpg

and then one inside by the plaques of TJ, Simon & Dan White.

284383=13397-img_4093.jpg

thanks to all the guys who came & paid the respects to TJ, Simon & Dan. All good guys & mates.
For those who came & did not know them I hope that the explanation I gave you at the Wat helped you understand a little what we are doing & the tradition we are endeavouring to create amongst the riders here. And one day more of us may need a final resting place in North Thailand. Wat Chong Klang in MHS could be that place for GT Riders after their last ride. Thanks guys....please add some more photos.

MHS Music night photos are here.
It was a huigely enjoyable night.

I expected a 10.30-11am departure the next day,but the guys were chaffing at the bit to finish off the ride.
Breakfast was had by almost all at the Salween Restaurant.

284407=13413-img_4139.jpg

Eveeryone got away by 10AM & I somehow got delayed setting off with the group & ended up being tail end charlie all the way to the X-Centre, so again not much in the way of pix.

The Kiew Lom R1095 Viewpoint Pang Mapha - Pai.

284407=13414-img_4144b.jpg

& it was worth hanging out at the back for some attention.

Just looking at the members list...

Can you believe that Aussie John joined the forum 6months after me, kicked the bucket 3 years ago, and still has 40 more posts than me...

Bet he is up there somewhere, still leaching of free internet...

Still thinking of you mate...

Cheers,
Daewoo

Would be great if it was the 9th.

The Bride and I arrive Nov 8th - Planning to spend the 9th organising a bike and hitting the MHS Loop on the 10th...

If this ride was planned for the 9th, we would surely re-organise things to make it...

I look forward to an update.

Cheers,
Daewoo

Oh shucks Bungy - that's not the kind of warm and loving sentiment that I expected from the New Zealand Cultural Ambassador - you made me feel all happy...

I'm bringing The Wife this time, so I'm not sure I want to introduce her to the likes of you - might prevent me from ever returning again...

It's about 18months since the last trip - so looking forward to catching up with some old faces - I'll post up another thread soon...

Just want to bed down the date of the Memorial Ride, because if it is on the 9th, I will need to fly a day earlier... that in itself isn't a problem, but leaving the three man demolition crew with my Mum (69yo) for an additional day it...

See Yall soon,
Daewoo.

I remember John Hamilton approaching me at the Prince Chumphon Shrine (I was wearing a GT-Rider shirt), while at the Chumphon Bike Week back in 2008 I think it was. Nice bloke. He told me he had ridden a 125 all the way from Phuket. I was well impressed!
