WHAT IS IROT, Independent Riders of Thailand about

IROT is not a club, nor will it ever be one.

IROT is simply a connection that will be utilized in order to show who the Independent Riders are here in Thailand. This is something that started with a guy from Udon (Ray) and I just expanded on it a little.

We have colors and rockers but we are the riders that don't belong to any club but love to ride and have 3 codes we go by; 1: We don't drink and ride 2; We dont do or get involved in drugs and 3; We try and do the best we can for our communities and ourselves, we try and be upstanding and honest in all we do.

There is no cost to be an IROT except that you must pay same cost we pay for the colors (no mark up etc.)

We will try and set up to meet at one of the rallies twice a year just to share information and get to know one another better.

I am a retired U.S. Marine and don't want any rules or obligations to anyone anymore thus not making this a club. I just would like for the riders that ride for fun, freedom etc. to be able to distinguish one another should we ever meet on the road. We all have the same idea in life and it is great to share this with one another.

I am looking for someone that could possibly set up a website so that we could share experiences and be able to chat with one another more easily. Currently we just email each other. Only 6 Riders wearing these colors currently. And some are husband and wife duo's.

Hope we are not steeping on any club's here in Thailand by doing this as we mean to do no wrong to anyone, here or anywhere else.

I have been a member of clubs in the past and I enjoyed them but now since I am retired but still working in Bangkok I just wanted to expand on the individuals that ride by themselves and are not members of any clubs.

Hope this doesn't offend anyone or any club. I am of the nature that if I cannot give 100% to something then I don't want to be a part of it,thus the reason for IROT. No Rules, No have to's etc. If you can make it then great, if you can not so be it. No one will hold it against you.

Hope this explanation is understandable and that others are ok with it.

It is just a way that we can spot each other at rallies etc. and know that this rider is not in any club but rather just rides to ride and may be able to tell others about his/her journeys.

Got any pics of the 'colors'?

'I rot'? Sounds a little strange.
Maybe 'Independant Bikers Of Thailand'. IBOT!
Then you can refer to any female members as 'fembots'. :D

Good idea but I may even be too independent to join an independent riders club. I will, though, check your website regularly, like I do this one, if you manage to get one up and running. I agree completely that it's more about the Zen experience of keeping 2 wheels upright than wearing colors in a bar and drinking beer. Good on ya for your effort. Michael

Dan i like it BUT can you change the crosses to grave stones therefore not alienating any race or religion.

And before any one sez anything I KNOW they represent war graves but NOT EVERY one knows this.

and also maybe offer a smaller patch as well for the front of a jacket. never been to hot on big patches on my back.

Cool work

The IROT colors do come with the same patch as the larger one but smaller for the front of the jacket as others have stated. I can't remember what the full set costs but I know Ray is having them locally made in Udon.

Not bad IROT, I saw something about this elsewhere on the net. Can't remember where.

For me and some others our own independent 'motorbike-esque' website 'OTRT' (On The Road Thailand) and SRC (Siam Racing Club) is the thing we do.
It's not a club per-sa though and tends to be more monitoring, observing and street riding/racing)
Still the independent edge you speak of is a nice thing and a breath of fresh air.

I and others have noticed there is a dearth of sportsbiker gangs/clubs in Thailand, to this end a bunch of us are forming our own 'club' to fill this void. The attitude factor some of the clubs have is off-putting for the 'middle of the road bikers' out there.
A bunch of us approached a certain biker club to join and got told 'your sports bikes aren't choppers and aren't big enough.'
So the snobbish ways are a bit silly there.

I say keep the crosses, most of us farang are Christian of many denomination out here and I don't see why a club should always pander to minorities. Just my thoughts on that.

The motto is good, I like that. Also the country names give it a 'rallying effect'

Making non-drinking and riding is pretty draconian, especially as this is Thailand man. While it serves a purpose, you will struggle to get younger riders into your ranks if you enforce this.
Drinking to moderation or even a 3 or 4 drink rule would be a little more even-handed on this one.

Helping the local community is a nice touch If charity work is your thing. This might detract from concentrating on getting out there on the road.

I now that when a bunch of us at OTRT and SRC have finished a long ride there's nothing better than to pull up to a bar and get the drinks and girls rolling :D

Ok I've rambled enough now :)

Good luck and wish you success.

IROT is a good name as most riders are a bit rotten after a few days in the saddle.

We do not have rules but the 3 codes I spoke of earlier, it is up to the Independent Rider weather he/she goes by the codes or not.

We do not push anyone and only hope that whomever wears the colors that they do their best for others as well as for themselves.

I too enjoy a good cold beer after a ride but then I don't ride afterwards.

I wish the best for all riders and if you should ever see one of the IROT guys/girls say hello.

Thanks

Well I guess I should chip in here first let me give the credit where the creidt is due, Dan's idea. I would best describe it as an extension of the ride lists in Udon and Khon Kean. Sharing a good experience with others.

Drinking it's about riding not drinking, But that being said I don't drink, doesn't botjher me if someones else does just a personal choice. But, if it gets to a point that you are dangerous to others then I do have problem with it. Heck truth is after a good ride I have been know to have a few beers and toddle off myself. But is never the purpose in the ride for me.

Each to his own that the entire idea.

Most of the guys I have ridden with know their limits and stay within them.

After the rides done you want to get plastered that's up to you. Your the one who has to ride with a hangover, not me

Anyway I fully support Dan in his efforts, anything that gets the riding community together to share expereinces and routes is a good thing.

I've ridden in clubs here as ewll. What I found was some silly power struggle about who was in cahrge. So the ride list no one is charge anyone can post a ride idea, up to the individual if goes or doesn't. I hope to see the evolve to the same concept.

Just people hooking up with others when they want to.

The concept has done well in Udon and Khon Kean, hope everyone can do the same within their given areas. You know riding no politics

Hmmmm, seems a bit of an oxymoron to me - you are independant but want to identify with others by wearing a club style patch?

Let's ask a couple of Thailand's probably truest "independant riders" what they think: DavidFL/Captain Slash, what do you reckon chaps - would rolling around like a Hells Angel wannabee enhance your biking pleasure or are you happy to just continue as you are and socialise when you happen to bump into people on the road? ;-)

Good luck anyway and for sure, I'll give you a wave on the road!

Cheers,

Pikey (quietly smiling after having probably just lit the fuse... ;-))

Guess I'm no good at lighting fuses either

Now heres you an oxy whatcha ma call it's

A retired Marine and a retired cop Hells Angels wanna be's

Seriously guys hope you can have as much success as we have with our ride lists.

Pretty simple stuff post the rides people who want to want to go, go those that don't.

I think you guys up north have a lot more riders around then we do here in Udon. So it has proved to work here. But I'm not a meeting kind of guy so the clubs were not for me.

By the way pikey sorry I missed yuo in Cahing Mai I was looking forward to it.

Hi Ray,

No, I'm not a club type guy either. I can see your/Dan's reasoning as you are fewer and probably more spread out than up here in CNX. This site fulfills my needs 100% - meet up with people, swap numbers & become friends, then post ride reports for others to benefit.

Yes, sorry not to have met you and some of the other guys at bike week recently. I will probably be down in Si Sa Ket for some days around Songkran next year for the annual family vidit and will chuck a bike on the back of my truck so may very well be able to hookup with some of you guys then.

Cheers & ride safe,

Pikey.

I have been thrown out of many clubs for being too independant and free thinking , but i will always continue to help people and contribute to the greater fund of knowledge and respect..

Lets us know when your coming this way Pikey.

Marco, you have me a little wrong, i like whisky (note without the "E"), rather than vodka. ;-)

Ray, yes, I will hookup with all you Isaan riders sometime around next Songkran - should be good.

BTW, you probably know this already but the original "Hells Angels" were ex WWII US pilots that got into bikes back after the war primarily to keep the wartime commradarie alive. 60 years on and people who are passionate about bikes still flock together no matter what their history. What a wonderful thing biking is eh! :-D

Cheers,

Pikey.

"It is just a way that we can spot each other at rallies etc. and know that this rider is not in any club but rather just rides to ride and may be able to tell others about his/her journeys."
Seems like you're having problems making contact with other riding fellows at Bike Meets etc - if I see a decent guy on an interesting bike I just talk to him, I don't need a patch for that. And all the guys who don't wear any patches are probably like minded guys if they dress and act like I do. I just ride to ride, have never once ridden in a group, and show up on bike meets whenever I feel like it. But I approach any motorcyclist anywhere (except in the men's room) if I think he's cool and can tell me about his bike or where he came from and where he's heading.
The good part I like about the whole thing is the NO DRINK rule, and it should be one, not a suggestion. I've always adhered to it, it's easier for me to say: "no drink at all, I'm riding" than "okay, only one beer", which leads to another one. I sometimes drive a car after a few brews which is wrong, but never a bike. Dropping it at only 25mph will result in a lot of pain and repairs.
I wish you luck with your club that doesn't want to be a club, there's a good idea behind it, more power to you. Maybe we'll meet somewhere, I'll be the independend rider of Thailand without a patch, not easy to recognize, but all you have to do is ask.
