ADV350 - Ask me any questions

No problem with clutch issues yet @ 6500km, ive just returned to Thailand after a 5000km tour through China and the bike was faultless

Have had that problem with a PCX 150 years ago and a ceramic clutch sorted that out.

I bought EBC brake pads for my NC750X and they were useless, worse than stock..................................ended up putting Brembo pads in and they were awesome, I also have Brembo in my X-Max and again awesome

I'm looking forward to watching your China trip. I have a quick look and the trip looks excellent.

I'm interested to know if you (or mechanic) has checked/adjusted valve clearnances and any results?

The Brembo front pads were carbon race...which literally chisel lathed the disc hahaha. They gave a very quick all or nothing stop which I was just getting used to before my scooter was flood damaged.

The Brembo rears were carbon ceramic which are the recommended pad in Thailand... but Brembo has contradictory website information that says this pad compound is unsuitable for large scooters. My experience was I found they just made for a very weak rear brake which was worse than stock pads.

My first ADV350 ended up with a bliued and warped clutch bell at about 15,000km. Huge judder on standing start. Seems other ADV350 riders experience this same problem at varying mileages.

Spotlights

I am using Lobo L11 for night riding and Lobo L7 for daytime running lights.

The Lobo comes with a wiring harness that includes a rotary dial to adjust the power level. High-low switching is independent of the ADV350 headlight switch, which is a bit of a pain, but I've got use to it now.

Night riding in the mountains has become so much fun that I often make nightly mountain commutes between Thoed Thai and Maesai just for the fun of it.

I purchase an extra yellow lenses cover for the Lobo L11 as they didn't come with the yellow lenses cover that the L7 did.

The Lobo were expensive, but I have no regrets purchasing them.

They have significantly extended my riding pleasure during both day and night.

Also, other vehicles do move out of the way for me, or don't pull out so often into my path, with the lights on.

Purchased from Lazada.

Interesting read regarding your lighting ADV ;)

As I only purchased my ADV 350 in March this year I had a blank canvas as to what extra lighting I would buy, we are spoilt with so much choice of lighting here in Thailand, from 500 baht sets upto 50 000 baht sets, and alot inbetween..........................I sent my bike down to an electical specialist in Bangkok and got work done, including a Fusehub, loud horn, USB charger 100w, Chigee Camera system and extra lights.

I had Loboo retangular lights before and they were great, done nearly 80 000km and never missed a beat in 5 years, but a few friends had the round Loboo and they failed early so that put me off............................I chose PIAA 220R x 4 lights, 2 x upper and 2 x lower, these have yellow/white or both option but no flash mode.............................after my China trip I decided to add a set of flashing lights and went cheap, Motowolf 5006 (2400 baht) which get good reviews (Yellow/White or both, and 3 x flashing options), only been on for a week now, but I like to use the flashing mode when I am riding by myself, you definetly get noticed more IMO

I had the valves adjusted on my Honda NC750X a couple of times and I could notice a difference, I will get my ADV 350 done as per book when the time comes.

Can you tell me more about the horn?
Make/model and mount position.

Does the horn work off the original horn wiring and horn button?

It's a Bosch electronic horn, I dont know the model as the shop in Bangkok supplied it, its mounted under the LHS floor board towards the front of the bike, can only just see it when the rubber mat is lifted..............................its very loud, alot louder than the stock horn which is still fitted................................next to the hazard light switch is a twoway switch, I can select the stock horn or the Bosch horn...........................and yes the factory horn switch is used to sound the horn still

Just purchased a pair of CST SC11 and will report back onced they are fitted and I've done the 'ironing' and applied some 'coercion'
View attachment 160371View attachment 160372

I scrubbed the tyres in yesterday, on the border roads between Maesai and Thoet Thai.

The day started out as a bright blue sky day, and the return night ride include a very heavy rainstorm with flowing surface water runoff.

Road surface conditions varied from bowling green smooth bitumen, scattered vegetation debris, moss, algae, concrete cancer badly broken slabs, dry landslides and wet landslides with thick mud.

If you've ridden these roads you'll know what a rodeo ride this can be. Sharp gradients, hairpin bends together with debris hazards require full concentration.

Heaps of fun.

The SC11 performed brilliantly. Never letting go in any of the road conditions on the day.

As I become more confident on them I might even say they are at least as good as the exceptional Metzler Karoo Street.

Balanced and fitted I paid ฿4050 for the SC11 versus Metzler current price, fitted and balance at a quoted ฿5950.

I'm well impressed and I'd suggest if you are up for a tyre change and want to try something new, consider a CST.

I had the full MALOSSI set on my former TMAX and I was impressed on the acceleration improvement it gave, only the petrol consumption went up too as the engine always revved at a higher level.
With the Malossi setup on my ADV350 at 6000rpm I'm cruising at at indicated 93kmph. The ADV350 redlines at 9500rpm so I'm happy that I'm not stressing the engine.

Any faster than 90kmhr I'm missing the opportunities to visually identify new adventures, and I feel the trip becomes a riding focused trip rather than a visual adventure.

If I recall correctly ADV350 max torque is around 4000rpm. The Malossi optimises this sweet spot, for my riding style and conditions.

I've used the term, in some posts, 'fanging it' (in the mountains). What I'm really aiming for in my riding style is, scooter controllability in the torque sweet spot, so that I can extract maximum grin factor, such as rolling on through the mountains using a CVT.

I don't thrash the ADV350 by over reving or high speed high rev range riding. I also always keep on top of maintenance, halving service intervals and using premium oils, filters etc.

I've ridden all styles of bikes over the years and enjoyed riding within the comforts, excitement and exhilaration of what each bike, small or large capacity, delivered.

And so it begins...time for a drive train tear down service
IMG_20250823_120557.jpg

I actually prepared yesterday, by removing the side cover and using an airline to blow out the belt and clutch dust.
IMG_20250823_122330.jpg

Note the Malossi clutch bell has heated and changed colour.
IMG_20250823_122340.jpg

And the variator face is showing signs of some ridging wear. I'll measure the wear with a straight edge and Vermeer gauge when its off. At this stage I'm thinking the rollers and guides will need replacing. Let's see how it goes...
IMG_20250823_122351.jpg

This is my first full Malossi strip down. After 25,000km I'm curious as to what I will find.

Had a problem...my (only used once) impact wrench wasn't strong enough to undo the variator bolt. I had purchased a cheap 330Nm torque, 20v 2.0Ah tool.
IMG_20250823_133422.jpg

So, reassemble the cover and off to a friend to borrow his bigger wrench...
IMG_20250823_150621.jpg
IMG_20250823_150624.jpg

That did the trick and undid the bolt in short time.

A bit of fine grit and debris saved from entering the drive chamber by the side cover foam filter. (On my previous dealer serviced ADV350 the mechanic had torn the foam filter and stuffed it back into position without replacing it with a new part).
IMG_20250823_125626.jpg
IMG_20250823_125642.jpg

Its easy to see why the wear join in the O filter...I have a space OEM on my shelf.
IMG_20250823_132413.jpg

I'll clean this old filter more thoughly later and reglue it. I think I might be able to reuse another time. The foam hasn't degraded.

The cutch friction material has not worn much....and no broken springs.
Imagepipe_0.jpg

I will compare the used clutch to a new Malossi one I have and make a decision about replacement.
Same for the clutch bell...
IMG_20250823_160924.jpg

IMG_20250823_160627.jpg

With the clutch bell its possible to see some minor uneven wear.

I wonder how true it is? I haven't noticed any clutch judder.

Again I will compare and measure against a new Malossi bell I have.

Here you can see flat spot on the rollers...time to replace. With hind sight next time I will replace the rollers every 12000km. These have lasted about 20,000km
IMG_20250823_172444.jpg

The cage itself its in a similar condition and some obvious flat spots where the rollers sit. I think if the rollers had been replaced earlier it would have been in better condition.
IMG_20250823_172914.jpg

The lugs where the plastic slider guides run are hardly worn. The plastic slider guides are a bit of a sloppy fit.
IMG_20250823_172943.jpg

and on the variator pully face....using a straight edge, maybe 1mm of wear.

I'll be replacing the variator set as a whole.
