The show in the evening gets underway

There were two stages. One modern rock band at one end & the other end Traditional Shan.

The rock end

Seems a great venue ...despite the storm! Hope to see more pictures and will try to schedule a visit for another year (one more festival on my wishlist)

David, you are very lucky to be stationed up North and witness all these festivals. Down south nothing compares to this.
Incidentally, I will be on my way up north end of first week in May. Plan is to visit some places you and other GTR fellas posted on this forum, great source of info. Riding alone, 10-12 days trip.

There is a daily parade for 3 days to present the Luk Gaew Novice monks.
Every morning it's off to the temple for a lap around the wat 3 times & then into the Wat for blessings & making merit.

The parade was lead by a group of Palong people, local residents of Piang Luang - unknown to me Palong resident in PL - 2 kms down the road on the asphalt I was lead to believe & something to check out on another trip.

There are teams of guys to share the load carrying the Luk Gaew novices on their shoulders.

305203=22073-IMG_7607.jpg

It can be hard work - some of the guys are a bit bigger & heavier.

305203=22079-IMG_7612.jpg

Some guys get it easy

305203=22074-IMG_7581.jpg

305203=22072-IMG_7601.jpg

The young guys seem to enjoy it all

305203=22078-IMG_7584.jpg

305203=22075-IMG_7798.jpg

305203=22076-IMG_7790.jpg

but not the older heavier guys.

305203=22077-IMG_7611.jpg

305203=22090-IMG_7616.jpg

Everyone pours into the Wat - Wat Piang Luang.- for merit making & a blessing.

The monk gives them their instructions & a blessing

305203=22084-IMG_7638.jpg

305203=22085-IMG_7640.jpg

Then the novices pay respect & chant the required text

One of the beauties of Poi Sang Long in Piang Luang I thought was that Shan villagers came from all around the Piang Luang - Wiang Haeng valley.
I never realized there were so many Shan living out there. In fact I'd say it is just about all Shan.

There was a huge fair ground set up in the school yard.

305300=22141-IMG_7699.jpg

Each group had their own sala hut where they camped for the night with their respective Luk Gaew novice monks.

305300=22142-IMG_7535.jpg

305300=22145-IMG_7530.jpg

305300=22143-IMG_7534.jpg

Despite being a religious event there was loadsa music, dancing & drinking. It was a full on party time.

305300=22144-IMG_7566.jpg

They went all night it seemed.

305300=22146-IMG_7871.jpg

305300=22148-IMG_7879.jpg

305300=22149-IMG_7562.jpg

On the second day a huge storm hit in the afternoon, cancelling the afternoon parade.

The playground became a mud field.

305300=22150-IMG_7882.jpg

Still they partied on at night

305300=22147-IMG_7881.jpg

In the storm one of the stages was somewhat messed up

305300=22151-IMG_7700.jpg

Roofs damaged

305300=22152-IMG_7707.jpg

& the power was well & truly interrupted,

305300=22153-IMG_7704.jpg

but somehow repaired.

Cleaning up at the Wat after the storm

305300=22212-GTr-Wat-WianGHaeng-02.jpg

more to come..
