Hi,

I am a fairly new member on holiday in Thailand. I only discovered the new members forum right now ...

At the moment I am in Mae Salong and I am considering taking Rural Road 4044 along the river Kok to drive back to Chiang Rai. What quality of road should I expect?

I rented a Honda Lead 125 and I am a bad driver - very slow. As long as the road is sealed or a a good dirt road, which is not too steep, I am fine. Today I went from Doi Tung via 1338 and 1130 to Mae Salong which was really fine and a lot of fun.

Thanks for your help,
Monika

The dirt basically starts / finishes here

You can check out some of these earlier GTR trip reports for riding along the Kok.

On the North side

On the South side

Personaly I would not recommend you tackling the dirt section on an automatic scooter, especially if you are an inexperienced rider.

Thanks a lot for linking all these reports. I spent the evening looking at all those great rides and photos - even though I knew after the first few pictures - this is not for me.

So I will keep to the 1089 to return to Chiang Rai - and maybe one of these days go up the river kok starting in Chiang Rai - riding as far as i can ;-)

Anyway, looking at the map it should be possible to got to Thaton via Wawi on sealed roads - maybe I try this. And I also want to go south of Chiang Rai.

Go up to Doi Chang the back way via the weir. The turn off is on the Den Har road route 1211

the road is all concrete / asphalt.

Hi David,

today I went with my Scooter from Chiang Rai to Thaton via Doi Chang, as you suggested and it was a great day and a great ride and fitted my abilities well :)

By the way: now I understand this report much better ;-)

The day after tomorrow I would like to go up to Phu Chi Fa, spend the night and return the following day.

Is it possible to do these steep declines on an automatic scooter, when I might be breaking all the time?

Would it be best to take the 1152, then 1048 and then straight up to Phu Chi Fah - or should I rather take the long way, taking the 1020 after Ta and then the 1155? In that case - what about the 4017, followed by the Sa At and Sao Wa Road to Thoeng? There are so many possibilities and I am really unsure what I am able to do. I also do not want to be bored on a super 4 lane highway (1020 - which looks like nowaydays it also might be 4 lanes in the western part?).

Or should I split it into 3 parts - first going to Chiang Khong or a bit further turning south, do the 1039 to Chiang Kham (the real steep part is going up) and then back to Chiang Rai - again wondering whether to take the road starting in Thoeng and the 4017.

I'd really appreciate it if you could help out one more time with your suggestions - then I'll go back to Germany - till maybe next year ;-)

Here's all you need to know

Id recommend going to Chiang Khong.
Ride up R4029 & then 1093 to Phu Chi Fah
Spend the night .
Then ride down 1093 from Phu Chi Fah to 1155 & home to Chiang Rai, which ever way.
If you want to tackle the Big Dipper R4018 do it from East to West, 1155 to R1020. NOT West to East 1020 - 1155.

Some years ago I meet these girls coming down from the Big Dipper. They were happy and thought it was fun, unlike some HD riders I rode with.
Don't think they speak to me anymore. :joy:

Hey, I’m Beremy

I love to review hotels, restaurants, places I visit, and write about anything lifestyle in general. Of course, traveling is my biggest passion, and it brings me SO much happiness! But even more is being able to share my experiences with others.

I am also a bit of a nature freak. I love being outdoors. I love riding motorcycle & especially Harley Davidsons. I am always exploring.

I just love being able to let go of all the routines and schedules that we become so attached to, so used to… I just want to be wild and adventurous!

Hi David,

I did exactly as you said (no Big Dipper) and it was great - perfect for me :)
Thank you a lot for helping me make my holiday a really good one - tomorrow I'll fly back to Germany,

Monika
